HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2024 50 Jocelyn Hess University of Tennessee, Knoxville Jocelyn Hess is a rising junior studying materials science and engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a minor in honors leader- ship studies. She spent the summer of 2023 studying the relationships between biofiber flow properties and their PLA-biocomposite mechanical strength at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She also completed a summer internship at the German Aerospace Center in Cologne, Germany, focusing on the development of a glass fiber- reinforced lunar regolith composite. Hess is the Travel Chair for her university’s Material Advantage Chapter and is a freshman mentor for the Society of Women Engineers. She plans to obtain a Ph.D. focusing on composites and will pursue a professorship and research career at a university. Jackson Hollenbaugh Purdue University Jackson Hollenbaugh is a senior majoring in materials science and engineering at Purdue University. He is a member of the Purdue University Material Advantage Chapter, where he will serve as professional development chair this upcoming academic year. Hollenbaugh has completed two summer internships with Steel Dynamics Inc. and hopes to use this experience there to obtain a career in the steel industry. He attended AISTech this past summer where he spoke on a panel discussing university-steel industry relationships. He emphasized the importance of industry scholarships and internships to help boost the interest of steel industry careers. Jesse Pequeno Wayne State University Currently a senior at Wayne State University, Jesse Pequeno majors in welding and metallurgical engineering. He is also taking courses toward a master’s degree in alternative engineering technology and later plans to pursue a doctorate in material science and engineering. He is the vice president of Wayne State University’s welding and metallurgical engineering student organization, which aims to create a pipeline of trade school students into its bachelor’s program to embolden and SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS provide a form of social mobility for those in southeast Michigan communities. Pequeno has an artistic background, and his passion for materials science grew from blacksmithing, bladesmithing, and silversmithing for an ornamental fabrication shop. Emma Sampey Purdue University Emma Sampey is a rising junior at Purdue University, majoring in materials science and engineering (MSE). She became interested in MSE through the Engineering Projects in Community Service program at Purdue, where she joined the MSE Bronze Team. Sampey has led multidisciplinary teams through this program and has delivered projects to the Lafayette and West Lafayette communities. Since May 2023, she has worked at Caterpillar as a parallel co-op. Through Caterpillar, she has volunteered for the ASM Materials Camp hosted by the Peoria Chapter. Sampey has been a part of the American Foundry Society Purdue Chapter since 2023 and looks forward to working as the social media chair this fall. Rose Sharga University of Pittsburgh Rose Sharga is an upcoming senior at the University of Pittsburgh, studying materials science and engineering (MSE). Sharga attended Lehigh University’s Summer Engineering Institute, a two-week program that involved learning about different fields of engineering. To achieve certification from this program, she and her fellow teammates had to create or improve a product and then present it in a Shark Tank type of process. Her team researched exoskeletons, ultimately placing third out of 10 teams. Sharga is currently a co-op at Westinghouse Electric Co., where she is involved in a variety of projects in support of the engineers. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in MSE while working full-time after graduation. Acta Materialia Scholarships The Acta Materialia Scholarships were established in 2017 by Acta Materialia through its Board of Governors, as an expression of commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Two scholars will each receive a certificate and check for $5000 toward educational expenses for one academic year.
