William Park Woodside founded our Society as the Steel Treaters Club more than 100 years ago and later served as president of ASM. The scholarship was established to support an ASM student member studying materials science and engineering at the junior or senior level who demonstrates strength in leadership, character, and academics. Tuition of up to $10,000 for one academic year and a certificate of recognition are awarded to the recipient. Austin Davis Arizona State University Austin Davis is a senior at Arizona State University (ASU), where he is studying materials science and engineering (MSE). Since his freshman year at ASU, he has researched 2D semiconductor materials under Dr. Seth Tongay for applications in computing technology. This past summer, he participated in the Energy REU program at Binghamton University in New York, researching room-temperature magnetic semiconductor materials for quantum information science applications. He currently serves as the president of the Material Advantage chapter at ASU and is earning a master’s degree in MSE through the 4+1 program. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a doctorate and work in the semiconductor or renewable energy industries. The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship was established in 2006 through a generous bequest by the couple. It serves as an expression of their commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Tuition of up to $10,000 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. Sarah Cole Boise State University Sarah Cole is a senior studying materials science and engineering at Boise State University. She started her research journey in high school at Boise State’s Advanced Materials Laboratory, where she developed additively manufactured nuclear sensors. Her undergraduate research has focused on ceramic nuclear fuel fabrication. Cole also completed a summer internship at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University, researching materials for energy storage. She has participated in the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering Program, Nuclear Engineering Student Delegation, and American Nuclear Society Capitol Hill Day. Cole plans to pursue a doctorate in materials science and engineering, and then pursue a research career in energy-relevant materials. George A. Roberts Scholarships The George A. Roberts Scholarships were established in 1995 through a generous contribution from Dr. George A. Roberts, FASM, past president and retired CEO of Teledyne, to the ASM Foundation as an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate members of ASM at the junior or senior level who demonstrate exemplary academic and personal achievements, and interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Five scholars will receive a certificate and check for $6000 toward educational expenses for one academic year.
