ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2024 21 While the 2T TFM offered a crisper image with better resolution, PAUT is still the best option for this application due to its acceptable acquisition speed, especially for manual scanning. TFM’s improved data resolution is not enough to justify the trade-off in speed. Another point in PAUT’s favor is the probe footprint. The part geometry of the rib-todeck assembly obliges the inspector to use a small footprint probe in contact with the surface. To obtain optimal results with TFM, a larger footprint is recommended. Thus, PAUT remains the better choice for the time being. Work has begun to test PAUT versus TFM for other applications, including structural boxes linking roof support piles and mining tank shell plate end joints. When testing other applications, it is important to perform technique validation to ensure tip diffraction can be correctly detected and measured. ~AM&P For more information: Mathieu Leclerc, global product application leader, Evident Scientific, 3415 Rue PierreArdouin, Quebec, QC G1P 0B3, Canada, mathieu.leclerc@evidentscientific.com, www.evidentscientific.com.
