Baxter, Jr., of Aurora, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 18 in Summa Hospice after succumbing to injuries from a car accident. He was 81. Baxter was born on June 22, 1942, in Niagara Falls, New York. President of his class, he graduated with honors in 1960 from Lewiston-Porter High School in Youngstown, New York, and in 1965, Baxter received his B.S. in metallurgy from the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-1969, including a year in Subic Bay in The Philippines, and attained the rank of SK 2nd Class (Storekeeper). He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for honorably serving during a time of war or conflict. Following discharge, Baxter took a job as an assistant editor at ASM International. He worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming managing editor of the magazines Advanced Materials & Processes and Heat Treating Progress before retiring in 2008 with nearly 35 years of service at the organization. His dedication to creating high quality, interesting content for those publications was an inspiration to his fellow staff. After his official retirement, Baxter continued to edit and write part-time for ASM International and enjoyed convivial luncheons with his colleagues. Roger Alan Jones, FASM, of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, CEO emeritus of Solar Atmospheres Inc., passed away on August 15. He was 69. Born in Abington, he was a 1974 graduate of PhilMont Christian Academy in Dresher. He then attended Hocking Technical College, Nelsonville, Ohio. Jones began his career in the heat treating division of ABAR Corp. in 1975. In 1978, he joined the newly formed Vacuum Furnace Systems Corp. and began working with its founder, his father. In 1983, Jones assisted in the founding of Solar Atmospheres Inc., serving as vice president until 1993 when he was promoted to president. As the company grew, Jones was promoted to corporate president in 2001 and became chief executive officer in 2017. After 45 years of service, he retired in 2019 as CEO emeritus. Solar Atmospheres became an awardwinning company with Jones as its CEO. He was a member of ASM International and its Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter, where he chaired nine committees, served as Chapter chair, taught MEI courses, and was named Delaware Valley Materials Person of the Year. ASM honored Jones with the William Hunt Eisenman Award, President’s Award, Meritorious Service Award, and the Adolph Schaefer Special Achievement Award. Jones was a pillar of the ASM Heat Treating Society (HTS) and volunteer leader for ASM International. He served as HTS president 2013-2015 and was an ASM trustee 2016-2019. In 2018, he was elected to the ASM Class of Fellows. In 2015, Jones received the George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award. Jones was also a member of the Metal Treating Institute (MTI), where he was president, a trustee, and member of various committees. He was awarded MTI’s prestigious Heritage Award in 2018. Albert Kay, FASM, TSS-HoF, of Barberton, Ohio, passed away on August 4. Kay, president of ASB Industries for nearly 40 years, was a pillar of the ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS) and a volunteer leader for ASM International. He served as TSS president 2000-2002, TSS treasurer 1994-1997, and volunteered on nearly all of the various TSS committees over the years. Kay also was a member of the ASM International and ASM Materials Education Foundation Investment Committee 2005-2008 and the ASM Finance Committee 2002-2008. He was an early financial supporter of the ASM Foundation’s Materials Camps for students and teachers. In 2008, he was elected to the TSS Hall of Fame. Kay’s citation reads: “For excellence in recognizing and commercializing emerging technologies such as HVOF and cold spray and for his proactive role in ASM and TSS committees leading to the spread of thermal spray in many industries.” His contributions to the industry were also recognized worldwide, as the German Thermal Spray Association (GTS) awarded him the GTS Ring of Honor in 2007. In 2016, Kay received the ASM Distinguished Life Membership award. He was a pillar of the local ASM Akron Chapter for decades. Kay received a business and accounting degree from Toledo University in 1955 and earned his CPA. He was a partner at Coopers & Lybrand before taking the ownership reigns at ASB Industries, growing both the business and the technology.
