The honor was given for his contributions in quality management systems and business excellence in industry. In addition, he was recognized for fostering a productive relationship between industry and academia as well as sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring professionals. The ceremony took place at the 13th World Quality Congress & Awards held recently in Mumbai. Nix Elected to Royal Society of London Prof. William D. Nix, FASM, of the department of materials science and engineering at Stanford University, and a member of ASM since 1957, was elected to the Royal Society of London as a Foreign Member. Nix was cited for his work on the mechanical properties of materials, especially thin films and nanoscale plasticity. His work involved the development of experimental techniques and theoretical concepts showing that size matters and that “smaller is stronger,” leading to applications in materials science, microelectronics, and mechanics. The induction ceremony was held in London on July 12. Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is the oldest scientific academy in the world and includes Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin among its past Fellows. Zhao Nix Sampath Sampath Honored by ACerS Sanjay Sampath, FASM, TSS-HoF, distinguished professor of the department of materials science and chemical engineering at Stony Brook University, will receive The American Ceramic Society’s (ACerS) 2024 Rishi Raj Medal for Innovation and Commercialization in Ceramics. The award recognizes a member of the ceramics and glass research community for exceptional discoveries or inventions that can, or have, led to innovative products or processes. Sampath will receive this award and present his research at the ACerS 126th Annual Meeting on October 7 in Pittsburgh. Sampath has published 250 journal articles and been awarded 15 patents. Zhao Named UConn Dean Ji-Cheng (JC) Zhao, FASM, has been named the next dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Connecticut (UConn), effective August 12. Zhao previously served as department chair of materials science and engineering and Clark Distinguished Chair Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to his tenure at the University of Maryland, he was a professor at The Ohio State University’s department of materials science and engineering and also served as a program director at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy. Zhao is a past trustee of ASM International (2019-2022) and a longtime member of its Alloy Phase Diagram Committee.
