HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2024 69 MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Indian Institute of Metals-Kanpur Chapter, Indian National Academy of Engineering-Kanpur Chapter, BIS Student Chapter, SERB, and ASM’s Kanpur Chapter. The camp attracted 37 students and nine teachers from nine schools in Kanpur. Dr. Navin Manjooran, FASM, ASM senior vice president, joined online for the opening session as he highlighted the importance of materials in today’s world. On day three, ASM President Pradeep Goyal joined online and addressed the participants. The Material Advantage at IIT Kanpur is affiliated with the ASM India Chapter, Mumbai. On day four of the camp, students observed manufacturing demonstrations of materials sectioning, materials deformation, sheet metal working, casting, and joining. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Manuel Named Swanson Dean Michele V. Manuel, FASM, was named the new U. S. Steel Dean of the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, the first woman to hold the position. She is a National Academy of Engineering member and serves on the board of governors of Acta Materialia Inc. Manuel is a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, National Science Foundation CAREER award, and NASA Early Career Faculty award. Her passion for translational research led to the founding of Element12 Biotechnologies LLC, a medical device company advancing biodegradable metals. She began her academic career at the University of Florida (UF), joining the faculty in 2008 and serving as the Rolf E. Hummer Professor. Since 2017, she has served as chair of the department of materials science and engineering and the nuclear engineering program. Manuel earned her Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from UF. Sekreter Represents ASM at Joint Tech Summit Carola Sekreter, director of business development for ASM International’s Materials Solutions Network, shared her expertise at the Joint Tech Summit hosted by The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and The Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, held in April. AMT’s online recap of the Pittsburgh event included Sekreter’s insights on the current challenges in materials science. She discussed the dynamic changes required in a fast-advancing materials landscape and the evolving requirements for research collaborations that include a renewed focus on fostering relevant partnerships. She also cited the pivotal role that standards play in the development and qualification of new materials. Kanematsu Receives SIAA Award Hideyuki Kanematsu, FASM, (right), and Hajime Ikigai received an achievement award from the Society of International Sustaining Growth for Antimicrobial Articles (SIAA). The Society recognized the professors for their work in helping SIAA to standardize its evaluation methods for anti-biofilm products (ISO 4768) and to start certifying anti-biofilm products as of July 1. Kanematsu is a specially appointed professor of materials science and engineering at the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Suzuka College in Osaka. Ikigai is professor emeritus of chemistry and biochemistry at KOSEN. Kanematsu is a member of the AM&P Editorial Committee and the International Materials Reviews Committee. Manuel Materials Campers were instructed to break open an LED TV as a way to learn about its various materials and components. Sekreter
