HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2024 66 integrated more hands-on experiences and expert insights into our lectures, enriching the learning experience. My teaching philosophy emphasizes lifelong learning and self-awareness. I encourage students to identify and confront their weaknesses, fostering a problem-solving mindset. This approach prepares them for academic challenges and equips them with resilience for life’s hurdles, much like failure analysis in materials science. I look forward to many more years of contributing to this incredible community, fostering the next generation of materials scientists, and continuing my own journey of discovery and teaching. The majority of chapters indicated that the percentage of membership below age 35 was less than 30%. Engagement with young professionals has often relied on the ASM Chapter email list or ASM Connect, with less than 25% of outreach performed via social media sites such as LinkedIn. Many of the comments received from these chapters addressed the lack of young professional recruitment and difficulty encouraging young members to take on more responsibilities and larger roles within ASM. To improve young professional engagement, chapters indicated that student focused events, technical presentations, and facility tours are likely methods for stirring interest, as shown in the graph. Firsthand experiences often provide the best opportunities for inspiration and connection between young adults. Similarly, offering spaces for students still in educational development extends an environment for networking at the earliest stages, before formal careers even begin. The EPC, in conjunction with ASM, plans to engage with local chapters to provide more of the opportunities young professionals want to see in their chapters. Toward this goal, the EPC will build a LinkedIn page for posting relevant information and professional development resources in the hopes of providing a better outlet to engage students and young professionals.
