The awards program recognizes achievements of members of the materials science and engineering community. Awards will be presented at ASM’s Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 1, during IMAT 2024 in Cleveland. Tickets for the Awards Dinner can be ordered by using the IMAT registration form. Honorary Membership Prof. Diran Apelian, FASM, distinguished professor, University of California, Irvine will receive this year’s award “for the development of solutions for sustainability challenges of the 21st century: carbon-reduced infrastructure, recovery and reuse, and energy storage, and for over five decades of service and leadership to the field.” Honorary Membership in the Society was established in 1919 to recognize distinguished service to the materials science and engineering profession, ASM strategic plan and initiatives, and the progress of mankind. Medal for the Advancement of Research Dr. Boyd A. Mueller, FASM, vice president and general manager, Technology and Alloy Howmet Engine Products Business Unit, Howmet Aerospace, Whitehall, Mich., will receive this year’s award “for leadership in casting and metals processing technology enabling world-leading component and system capabilities, and championing ICME development and adoption, and its application to industrial process design and control.” The award was established in 1943 to honor an executive in an organization that produces, fabricates, or uses metals and other materials. The recipient, over a period of years, shall have consistently sponsored research or development and by foresight and actions, will have helped substantially advance the arts and sciences related to materials science and engineering. Distinguished Life Membership Mr. Ronald J. Parrington, PE, FASM, senior managing consultant, Applied Technical Services, Marietta, Ga., will receive this year’s award “for decades of outstanding volunteer service to the various national committees of ASM, the Failure Analysis Society, teaching ASM Courses and supporting various ASM Chapters.” Distinguished Life Membership was established in 1954 and is conferred on those leaders who have devoted their time, knowledge, and abilities to the advancement of the materials industries. Gold Medal Prof. Anthony D. Rollett, FASM, U. S. Steel Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, will receive this year’s award “for significant contributions to the development and use of simulations in materials science and engineering to model grain growth, recrystallization, and deformation in three dimensions.” The medal was established in 1943 to recognize outstanding knowledge and great versatility in the application of science to the field of materials science and engineering, as well as exceptional ability in the diagnosis and solution of diversified materials problems.
