ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2024 48 iTSSe TSS iTSSe TSS HALL OF FAME AWARDEES continued Dr. Daniel Sordelet, FASM, earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in materials science from Iowa State University (ISU). During the first ~20 years of his career, he worked as a senior scientist and group leader at the Ames National Laboratory on the campus of Iowa State University. During this time, he also served on the faculty in ISU’s Materials Science & Engineering Department. Sordelet formed the Ames Lab Plasma Spray Facility around 1990 with the emphasis of developing refractory coatings to contain molten reactive alloys during high- pressure gas atomization in the Powder Synthesis Facility located next door. In later years, Sordelet added HVOF capabilities to broaden his group’s research topics into wear-resistant and corrosion-protective layers. During his tenure at Ames National Laboratory and ISU, Sordelet published over 160 articles in peer-reviewed journals, was the recipient of two R&D 100 awards, and received over 20 U.S. and international patents (several of which were licensed by companies including Praxair Surface Technologies and Rolls-Royce North America). In 2009 Sordelet joined Caterpillar Inc. in the Advanced Materials Technology team at the Caterpillar Technical Center near Peoria, Ill. His early work focused on developing new materials and processes to support the CAT Reman business using thermal spray and laser cladding technologies that provided dimensional restoration and improved functional performance. In his current role as an Engineering Fellow, Sordelet has responsibility for the development and implementation of surface engineering technologies across the Caterpillar enterprise. He has successfully expanded the capabilities within the Advanced Materials Technology’s Surface Engineering Laboratory to include new forms of thermal spraying and laser cladding which have enlarged the portfolio of components that can be remanufactured. During his 15 years with Caterpillar, Sordelet has been granted 10 U.S. patents involving new thermal spray feedstock materials and advanced processing methods. He was named an ASM Fellow in 2017. Sordelet was recognized “for sustained, innovative development of surface engineering materials and processes and successfully transferring them from laboratory-scale ideas to full production industrial practices.” TSS PRESIDENT’S AWARD Robert Miller of Indianapolis, Ind., is the 2024 TSS President’s Award for Meritorious Service recipient. The TSS Meritorious Service Award recognizes exceptional service to the Thermal Spray Society and the thermal spray community. Miller’s journey in thermal spray technology began in 1978 at Metco in Westbury, N.Y., sparking a lifelong passion. In the mid-1980s, he joined the Thermal Spray Committee of ASM International, co-launching the ASM Thermal Spray Buyers’ Guide and contributing to the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology. In the mid-1990s, he initiated the first TSS Discussion Group email list, fostering collaboration. Holding degrees from MIT, he actively engages in professional activities, with eight U.S. patents and numerous publications showcasing his contributions to gas turbine coatings and thermal spray technology. As chair of ASM’s Thermal Spray Society in 2017, Miller led initiatives to enhance field practices, including insightful white papers on metallography. In late 2022, he mobilized the Accepted Practices Committee to address discontinuations like the FM1000 film for tensile bond testing, ensuring continuity. Initiatives to enhance industry standards, like round-robin testing of replacement adhesives, demonstrate his commitment to advancing thermal spray technology. Sordelet Miller SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THERMAL SPRAY HALL OF FAME The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the Thermal Spray Society of ASM International, recognizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spray. For a copy of the rules, nomination form, and list of previous recipients, visit tss.asminternational.org or contact maryanne. jerson@asminternational.org. Nominations are due September 30 of this year for recognition in 2025. 4 SOCIETY NEWS
