HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2024 59 McDonald Named Canadian Fellow André McDonald, FASM, associate vice president and professor in the department of mechanical engineering, University of Alberta, was named a 2024 Fellow of the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME). The FCSME award recognizes “excellence in mechanical engineering and significant contributions to the progress of the profession.” McDonald has impacted the engineering community through his roles as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology and director of the ELITE Program for Black Youth, among other endeavors. He currently serves on the ASM Board of Trustees. Zhao Appointed New Dean Ji-Cheng (JC) Zhao, FASM, currently department chair of materials science and engineering and Clark Distinguished Chair Professor of the University of Maryland, College Park, was named the new dean of engineering and education. His appointment begins August 12. Zhao served on the ASM Board of Trustees 2019-2022 and is a longtime member of the Alloy Phase Diagram Committee. He was the 2023 recipient of the J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award. Aliya Releases Failure Analysis Book Debbie Aliya, FASM, released a new book entitled, “Constructing Competence in Failure Analysis: A Technical and Human Factors Guide.” The 500-page volume, published by Koho Pono LLC, focuses on the mental and physical processes of failure analysis, while including new approaches to categorizing damage and fractography. Intended for working engineers, attorneys, technicians, and forensic specialists, it includes over 300 pictures, graphics, and illustrations. The book is available through print-on-demand at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and local bookstores. Sohn Recognized for Research Excellence Yongho Sohn, FASM, Pegasus Professor in the department of materials science and engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF), received the 2024 UCF Research Excellence Award. The award presentation was made during the university’s Founder’s Day ceremony. Sohn is currently a member of ASM’s Alloy Phase Diagram Committee and serves on the executive committee of the ASM Central Florida Chapter. Elder Named Fulbright Scholar Kate Elder, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory materials scientist, was selected as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar and will conduct research in Finland. Her project, “Establishing Process- Structure Links During Additive Manufacturing of High Entropy Alloys,” will lead to the manufacture of lighter and stronger parts suitable for high-temperature applications across many industries. The Fulbright-VTT Award in Science, Technology, and Innovation is jointly funded by the Fulbright Finland Foundation and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, where Elder will be working. Kanematsu’s Lab Enjoys Cherry Blossoms Hideyuki Kanematsu, FASM, celebrated the start of the 2024 school year with his students of the Kanematsu Laboratory by posing under the cherry trees in full bloom in April. The lab is part of the National Institute of Technology KOSEN, Suzuka College in Japan.
