HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2024 51 Dr. Elizabeth N. Hoffman, FASM Senior Vice President-Elect Elizabeth (Liz) N. Hoffman is the director of innovation and university engagement at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), a Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory focused on applied science for nuclear materials and processing solutions. Hoffman is responsible for SRNL’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program, providing opportunities for workforce development, scientific and technical vitality, and mission agility for the DOE. In addition, she directs SRNL’s postdoctoral research program and university engagement programs including the lab’s internship program. Hoffman is also responsible for the DOE Office of Environmental Management Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program, which offers internships, postdoctoral research, graduate fellow positions, and research award opportunities for students and faculty at minority serving institutions. Other opportunities for academics to collaborate with SRNL directed by Hoffman include the Office of Science – Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists visiting faculty program. Hoffman serves as a member of the National Laboratory Education Directors Council and is a fellow of the Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program. She is a Fellow of ASM International, a recipient of ASM’s Silver Medal Award, and a member of the Board of Trustees from 2020-2023. Hoffman holds a B.S. and Ph.D. from Drexel University in materials science and engineering. She became active in ASM International with the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter as a graduate student. Since then, she has been active in the Savannah River Chapter and is a member of Chapter Council and multiple awards committees. She also led the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board Task Force. Dr. Daniel P. Dennies, FASM, P.E. Nominee for Vice President Dr. Daniel P. Dennies is a licensed metallurgical professional engineer (P.E.) in the state of California. He has 31 years of experience working in various raw material, forging, aerospace, and aircraft related industries, and 16 years as a consultant. His experience in industry included working as a technical specialist and technical manager. He finished a career with Boeing as a Technical Fellow. His career in the aerospace industry included working on projects such as the Space Shuttle Main Engine, National Launch System, National Aerospace Plane, Delta and Titan rockets, and the International Space Station. He also worked on commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 787, military aircraft including the F-18 and C17, and proprietary programs such as the X-37B Experimental Unmanned Space Plane. As a consultant, Dennies has worked on projects in construction, plumbing, food processing, land-based turbines, bio- medical devices, fasteners, additive manufacturing, and power generation/energy. Dennies has given numerous technical presentations and has over 100 peer reviewed publications, including two books. He collaborated with NASA as a reviewer/contributor for an AIAA book on additive manufacturing in 2022. He has been an active member of ASM for 47 years. Dennies served on the ASM Board of Trustees from 2006-2009 and as an ASM Education Foundation trustee, 2004-2006, where he championed the Materials Camp program. He participated in more than 50 Materials Camps over 20 years including the first one. He has been an instructor and developer of ASM courses for 24 years. Dennies recently served as president of ASM’s International Metallographic Society and Failure Analysis Society. He was an editor/contributor to the ASM Handbooks on failure analysis Volume 11 and 11A published in 2021. He has served on 13 different ASM journals, committees, and councils. Dennies has been on the LA Chapter executive committee for over 30 years. He is currently working on the Chapter’s 100-year anniversary celebration. Dennies has earned numerous technical and volunteer awards including the William Hunt Eisenman award in 2024, Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention Editor’s Choice Article award in 2021, George Roberts Award in 2011, Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention Best Paper Award in 2010, Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award by Orange County Engineering Council in 2005, Allan Ray Putnam Service Award in 2004, ASM Fellow in 2002, ASM Instructor of Merit Award in 2002, and the NASA Silver Snoopy Award in 1998. He was an ASM Scholar in 1978. Mr. Lawrence A. Somrack Nominee for Treasurer Lawrence A. Somrack is retired president of NSL Analytical Services Inc.
