ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | APRIL 2024 32 iTSSe TSS iTSSe TSS SOCIETY NEWS It is with deep sadness that the TSS Community mourns the tragic death of Peter Richter, Jr. He was co-CEO, financial director, and co-founder of Impact Innovations GmbH. Richter died in an avalanche during a skiing trip in Alaska in February. He was an active participant in the Thermal Spray Society during his entire career. Richter was a longtime supporter of the International Thermal Spray Conference (ITSC). He was a speaker at ITSC, IMAT, and North American Cold Spray (NACS) along with supporting these conferences as an exhibitor. He also served on both the NACS Organizing Committee and the TSS Program Committee. Richter’s career focused on many areas of cold spray technology including the implementation of various design changes for improvements both in optimizing the process and working directly for the advancement of application. Many of his improvements resulted in high production processing and were adopted by numerous companies. Richter was directly involved in materials and parameter optimization, promoting a company with a strong R&D department, manufacturing, and assembly of equipment that was valued worldwide. Along with others, he helped set the business direction at Impact Innovations, leading to the robust and highly engineered equipment that has made a significant contribution to cold spray technology. BOOK RELEASE: ZINC COATED STEELS Prof. Arnold R. Marder, FASM (Lehigh Univ.), and Dr. Frank E. Goodwin (International Zinc Association), have authored a comprehensive new book entitled, The Metallurgy of Zinc Coated Steels. This 590-page book covers the current state of the science and technology of zinc coated steels, focusing on developments since 2000, when Prof. Marder authored a highly cited review article with this same title [Prog. Mater. Sci. 45, p 191-271, 2000]. The book includes a description of the technology used in continuous coating lines, the most recent relevant phase diagrams governing reactions on these process lines, detailed descriptions of interface reactions between the steel substrate and zinc alloy coatings and development of the overlay coating layer, and chapters on galvanizing bath phenomena and coating control. Chapters are also dedicated to the topics of electrogalvanizing and continuous physical vapor deposition of zinc and alloy coatings. Product performance is also addressed in detail, including chapters on current understanding of corrosion behavior (unpainted, passivated, and painted), forming, and welding of zinc coated sheet steels. Special chapters are dedicated to the galvannealing process and the galvanizing of advanced high strength steels, which are of vital importance to automotive technology. Chapters on recent advances in general galvanizing and future challenges facing this sector conclude the book, which is available at https://bit.ly/48v1GrI. TSS MOURNS THE LOSS OF PETER RICHTER
