HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MARCH 2024 53 CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS Gujarat Visits Plant and Hosts Nuclear Expert The ASM International Gujarat Chapter organized two successful events recently. First, they conducted a visit to the Sanand plant, which is part of Dana Corp., on December 22, 2023. Participating in this industrial visit were 15 Gujarat chapter members, including researchers, students, business owners, and academicians. The plant tour included observation of various production activities and quality checks. Three senior representatives from Dana explained the processes in detail, including the challenges. Gujarat Chapter officers honored three senior officers from Dana Corp. with mementos for their support in making it a beneficial experience. Going forward, the plant officers plan to collaborate with the chapter on future training programs. Second, on January 4 of this year, the Gujarat Chapter hosted an expert talk on “Boron Carbide: Manufacturing Technology and Applications in Defense and Nuclear Industry.” The speaker was Niraj P. Bhukhanwala, managing director of Bhukhanwala Industries Private Ltd. The event, free for members and nonmembers, was designed to spread awareness about the chapter’s activities and increase membership. A networking dinner was also arranged for all. Los Angeles Explores Cryogenics The ASM Los Angeles Chapter hosted a talk on “Introduction to Cryogenic Milling and Spark Plasma Sintering” at their January technical meeting. The featured speaker was Chris Melnyk of California Nanotechnologies. Melnyk is the director of business development at that company as well as founder and CEO of Vestige Life Pendants Consulting. He is listed as the primary inventor on California Nanotechnologies’ commercial cryogenic milling patent. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Korinko Receives SRNL Lifetime Award Paul Korinko, FASM, was selected by Savannah River National Laboratory (SNRL) as the recipient of its 2023 Donald Orth Lifetime Achievement Award. Korinko’s demonstrated technical excellence and leadership in his service to SRNL, the Savannah River Site, and the U.S. Department of Energy earned him the lab’s highest honor. His expertise in materials and physical metallurgy is internationally recognized as making significant impacts in welding/joining, permeation, and advanced manufacturing (AM). Korinko has seven patents, was published 57 times, has authored numerous technical reports and presentations, and is an ASM International Fellow. In the past few years, Korinko has applied his physical metallurgy knowledge to the plutonium mission in addition to continuing his lead roles in welding/ joining, permeation, and AM in support of the tritium mission. The award was presented to Korinko during a recognition event held last October in Aiken, S.C. Gujarat Chapter members tour Dana Corp.
