HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MARCH 2024 48 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Each One, Reach One ASM membership has been an important element in shaping my career. I joined ASM during my early years after returning to India from my five-year stint in the U.S., initially as a graduate student at MIT and later as applications engineer at Air Products. Although I was busy setting up my new startup of steel forgings, I made time to attend ASM meetings at the behest of some of my friends in the metallurgy industry. It was an enriching experience to learn about the variety of industries that the other members represented. That, according to me, rounded out my knowledge of the nuances of the metallurgy and materials science industries, even more than the theoretical knowledge gained in university. At every ASM Awards Dinner we hear other similar stories from the awardees, of the great impact ASM has had on their professional development. Now, as the ASM President, I urge you to share your ASM experience with others and help us grow membership to benefit others from the experiences of new members. In fact, in my mind, every member is an Ambassador of ASM. I am a firm believer in the “each one, reach one” philosophy. A larger and stronger community benefits both the industry and the individual. Reaching out to others about the benefits of ASM can come in many forms. Consider inviting a colleague to a Chapter meeting. If you are a manager, work to get your staff to sign up as members or consider a corporate membership package where the whole team will benefit from being a part of this community. Share your involvement by adding a footer to your emails indicating that you are a proud member of ASM and include a hyperlink to asminternational.org. As ASM President, I am proud of the work the Board and staff are doing to provide products and services to our members worldwide. Together, let’s expand that network and help ASM grow. Pradeep Goyal, FASM President, ASM International pradeep.goyal@asminternational.org INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CORNER Working Now for ASM’s Future For the past six years, I’ve served as the executive director of the ASM Materials Education Foundation, where my focus has been connecting students with materials science and engineering to cultivate the next generation of ASM International members. When the situation arose, I was happy to take on the interim role of executive director with ASM to work with my colleagues in a new way that would serve the current members of the Society while also preparing for future generations. I have led extensive discussions about individual staff roles, the structure of the organization, and how it might change to accommodate new ways of thinking and working. Through collaborating across departments, the organization can address the most critical aspects of ASM’s work to best serve the materials science and engineering community. These changes aim to make our staff more efficient without causing any noticeable disruptions for those currently working with us on publications or projects. While we are working to get our internal house ready for moving ahead in the future, there is also work being done by the Board and other volunteers to best move the organization forward. With some preliminary discussions happening now, the Board will be ready for its strategic vision work this summer. Together, ASM International will be well positioned to serve its members in the coming years. ASM International members have always been our best ambassadors. Your word to colleagues is our best opportunity to reach and bring in new members. You can also help colleagues to learn about the other products and services that ASM International has to offer. I hope that you will continue this tradition, and feel free to contact staff if you need any additional information. You are our most valuable asset, and we are always happy to help. In my new role with ASM, my goal is to contribute to the growth and strength of the Society, ensuring ongoing professional support for our current—and future— members. I’m excited about working together with all of you to achieve this goal.
