HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 43 Manjooran served as the chief guest for installing the chapter’s executive committee, followed by a program honoring students who contributed to the chapter’s growth including Surbhi Nagar, Rucha Ingle, Tejasvini Verma, Vedika Singh, Sanskruti Kukekar, Utpreksha Halmare, and Anjali Kadam. The chapter then hosted the 1st International Conference on Recent Advances in Science Engineering and Technology where Manjooran was the keynote speaker. He provided insights on “Inventing the Future with Materials: The Backbone of Modern Technology & Innovation.” The conference was organized by Cummins College of Engineering for Women in association with the Pune Chapter. The inaugural event received overwhelming interest resulting in 147 papers reviewed and 62 presented at the conference. Los Alamos Delves into Oppenheimer The ASM Los Alamos Chapter’s November 16 meeting featured a talk by Siegfried S. Hecker on “Plutonium: From Oppenheimer to Russia and North Korea.” Hecker is former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Currently, he is a professor at both Texas A&M University and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. While working on nuclear matters for most of his career he visited all countries with declared nuclear weapons programs, including North Korea. Hecker is the editor of “Doomed to Cooperate” (2016), two volumes documenting the history of Russian- U.S. laboratory-to-laboratory cooperation and “Hinge Points: An Inside Look at North Korea’s Nuclear Program” (2023) written with Elliot Serbin. Los Angeles Holds Past Chairs Night The ASM Los Angeles Chapter had Tony Vinter, retired from Shultz Steel, speak on his half-century in the forging industry at the November 2023 meeting. It was also Past Chairs Night, which served as an early kickoff to the Chapter’s centennial year festivities. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Mudali Receives Dual Honor ASM Board of Trustees member Prof. U. Kamachi Mudali, FASM, vice chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute, DAE, Mumbai, was honored by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his groundbreaking research and contributions to the metallurgical and materials field over the past four decades. The citation recognizes his visionary leadership and pioneering work in R&D, academics, and industry as phenomenal. In addition, Mudali was honored with the Gold Medal of the Society for Materials Chemistry during the annual meeting of the society at Mumbai on October 12, 2023. The award recognizes his contributions toward the understanding of degradation mechanisms of metallic materials employed in nuclear reactors and associated reprocessing plants by studying the chemistry of materials through systematic R&D and analysis. SME Announces ‘30 Under 30’ Honorees Bhargavi Mummareddy and David Scannapieco were both named among SME’s 2023 “30 Under 30.” The list recognizes future leaders in the manufacturing industry. The honorees are profiled in a supplement to the November issue of Manufacturing Engineering, an SME Media publication. Mummareddy and Scannapieco were selected based on their impact not only professionally, but also for their engagement with the manufacturing industry and with their individual communities. Mummareddy is an additive manufacturing engineer at Dimensional Energy in Ithaca, N.Y.
