ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 28 The ASM Eisenman Materials Camp for students, named after former ASM International President William Hunt Eisenman, was first organized by several materials engineers, scientists, and metallographers as a way to impart materials concepts to high school students during the summer break between grades. Most camps have been held at the geodesic Dome at ASM headquarters in Materials Park, east of Cleveland. The curriculum pairs a weeklong failure analysis project with many hands-on heat treating, metal casting, and materials characterization experiments (Fig. 1). The camps, which are weeklong using an all-day format, have mostly retained the same general structure since inception. Students must apply to this camp, and those who are accepted attend for free, including food and lodging. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the student camps were held virtually in 2020 and 2021 using two-hour sessions in the morning and afternoon, with at-home materials kits sent to each student attendee. With the invaluable help of master teachers, ASM staff, and volunteers like us, the camps were TEACHING MATERIALS SCIENCE TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT THE ASM EISENMAN CAMP The hands-on experience provided during an Eisenman Materials Camp for students is a compelling way to excite young people to consider a STEM career. There are also three camps held in India—in Jaipur, Pune, and Vadodara— as well as one camp in Germany conducted in Berlin. While each country has a different schedule and timing, the basic concept of combining a weeklong held for three consecutive weeks each summer during those years. Currently in the United States, 13 camps are held each summer, with about 25 to 30 attendees at each camp, typically held in mid-July. The students are 16 to 18-year-old high school students, which is the age over 70% begin deciding their major[1]. Foundation
