HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023 48 Houston Hosts Popular Course The ASM Houston Chapter hosted an engaging and well-attended course, “Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist” on September 29, at Stress Engineering Services Inc. The event drew 31 registered attendees, including 17 nonmembers and three students. Six chapter members took turns introducing major concepts in metallurgy throughout the course. Instructors included Justinn General from Lamons; Zach Julius, Jorge Perdomo, Suresh Divi, and Leo Vega from Stress Engineering Services; and Adam Dyer from SLB. The day concluded with a lab tour. Mirella Vargas from the ASM Alamo Chapter’s executive committee attended the event, with plans to bring the course to San Antonio. Los Angeles Holds Student Night The ASM Los Angeles Chapter held its annual Student Night on May 23, featuring graduate and undergraduate student presentations and scholarship awards. Among the many prizes, the chapter awarded scholarships to Shrey Mehta [$2500] (Brown University), James Cozatt [$1500] (California Academy of Math and Science; Purdue University this fall), and Bella Zapata [$1500] Leo Vega leads a lab tour of Stress Engineering Services Inc. for course attendees. Material Advantage Chapters of Excellence Awards Each year, ASM administers the Chapters of Excellence (COE) Awards Program on behalf of the Material Advantage Student Program. This competition judges the student social activities, chapter management, and overall report quality. Winners were formally announced at the Student Awards Ceremony at MS&T 2023.
