ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023 32 A panel session on “Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies” was held at Inter- national Materials, Applications & Technologies (IMAT) 2023 on October 18 in Detroit. Moderated by David Furrer, FASM, the event offered an opportunity for experts from various material societies to share their insights on the impact of new materials and manufacturing technologies in their respective fields. The session also provided a platform for attendees to give feedback and discuss the latest advancements in materials science, engineering, and technology. Discussion topics included materials for high performance and critical applications such as materials for aerospace and automotive, smart materials, and an update on the development status of advanced manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing, among others. The session began with an overview by Furrer, who reviewed the Four Industrial Revolutions that have impacted manufacturing over time. Today, many advanced manufacturing processes are directly linked to Industry 4.0. These include processes that are data enabled, model assisted, automated, and equipped with sensor- enabled adaptive controls. They also utilize interdisciplinary engineering and lean principles. Each panelist provided a brief statement of their perspectives on what Advanced Manufacturing is and ADVANCED MANUFACTURING PANEL AT IMAT 2023 Representatives from each of ASM International’s affiliate societies join a panel discussion on the impact of new materials and manufacturing technologies in their industries.
