Barrett Silver Medal presented by the ASM Rocky Mountain Chapter. This year’s Barrett Award Ceremony and Student Night, held in January, had the largest attendance in the history of the event. In addition, it was the chapter’s first Barrett Award Ceremony in over two years. Burke gave a lecture about combining several advanced characterization techniques to understand degradation of structural metals in demanding nuclear power generation environments. Adding to the festivities, scholarship chair John Speer awarded Aidan Ravnik, Camden Gruchow, and Caleb Schenck with scholarships to recognize their contributions to the Colorado School of Mines Material Advantage Chapter. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Cole Wins NNSA Gold Ed Cole, Jr., FASM, was recognized by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) in August with its highest honor—the Distinguished Gold Award. He was cited for his critical contributions to the field of microelectronics that have advanced missions of the NNSA, Department of Defense, and the intelligence community. NNSA Administrator Jill Hruby presented the award. Cole is currently a Fellow at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. He is a longtime member of ASM and EDFAS and is founding co-editor of Electronic Device Failure Analysis magazine. In 2018, he received the EDFAS Lifetime Achievement Award. IN MEMORIAM Subhash Mahajan, FASM, passed away on August 17. He was a distinguished professor in the department of materials science and engineering at the University of California, Davis. He received a top ranking in his class at the Indian Institute of Science in his native India. After obtaining a doctorate in materials science and engineering four years later from UC Berkeley, he worked for several years with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in England, and then for a dozen years with AT&T Bell Labs in the U.S. Mahajan held academic positions in France, Belgium, and Germany, and with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh before joining the Arizona State University (ASU) faculty in 1997. He became chair of that institution’s department of chemical and materials engineering three years later. In 2004, Mahajan received The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society’s National Educator Award. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering the following year. In 2006, he was elected to a three-year term on the board of trustees of ASM International. That same year, he became director of ASU’s new School of Materials. In 2007, he became an ASU Regents Professor, an honor bestowed for outstanding accomplishments in teaching, scholarship, research, and creative activities. Mahajan joined UC Davis in 2010. In 2013, he was selected to deliver ASM’s Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial Lecture and received the society’s Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award. Mahajan also served as the coordinating editor for Acta Materialia for many years.
