HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2023 52 2023 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher Award Recipient The ASM Materials Education Foundation and the Teacher Award Committee proudly announce the selection of Rebecca S. Heckman of Princeton High School in Ohio as recipient of the 2023 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher Award. Established in 2007, the award recognizes the accomplishments of one high school science teacher who has demonstrated a significant and sustained impact on pre-college age students. The award includes $2000 plus $500 travel costs to IMAT through the generous donation of Dr. Kishor M. Kulkarni, past trustee of ASM International, and his family. Heckman established a new materials science course at Princeton High School and as a result helped many students pursue a career in materials science, including her own daughter. Master Teacher Thomas Glasgow, FASM, retired from NASA Glenn Research Center, said of Heckman, “That decision to offer the classes was made with the virtue of hands-on science in mind as well as the possibility of preparing students for choosing careers.” The award will be presented on Monday, October 16, at the ASM Leadership Awards Luncheon at IMAT 2023 in Detroit. AWARD DEADLINES Heckman Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation Named 2023 Pacesetter Award Recipient The Pacesetter Award was established to recognize organizations for their support of volunteers and financial resources toward materials science and engineering education. Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation, headquartered in Cleveland, was named the 2023 recipient. The Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation is the Cliffs Corporation (Cliffs) charitable giving avenue. Cliffs began as a mining company in 1847. Over the past decade, the company has grown through the acquisition of companies directly involved in the steelmaking process (e.g., AK Steel and Arcelor-Mittal). Cleveland-Cliffs is now the largest flat-rolled steel company in North America and a leading supplier of automotive-grade steel. The company is vertically integrated, from mined raw materials and ferrous scrap, to primary steelmaking and downstream finishing, stamping, tooling, and tubing. With ongoing initiatives to reduce waste, improve water conservation, and reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2030, the company is committed to steelmaking sustainability. Cleveland-Cliffs has a strong focus on community engagement, encouraging employees to get involved and having their foundation lead in many of those efforts. Several Cliffs employees are ASM members, particularly from its R&D facility near Cincinnati. The ASM Materials Camp for Teachers in Cincinnati toured the innovation center this past summer. With their new commitment to the ASM Foundation, Cliffs is looking for more opportunities for connection and engagement.
