After graduation, he plans to spend a few years working in industry before returning to school to pursue a doctorate in materials science. 2023 Undergraduate Design Competition Winners The ASM Materials Education Foundation and Design Competition Committee are pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Undergraduate Design Competition. First prize goes to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for “Multi-objective Design of an Ultra-high strength Al Plate Alloy.” Team members include Louise Anderfaas and Darshdeep Grewal, as well as advisor Gregory B. Olson. The team will receive $2000, along with $500 travel assistance and $500 to the department to support future design teams. Second prize goes to Purdue University for “Optimization of Hot Flattening Procedure in Al 7050 Forgings.” Team members include Cameron Hillsman, Megh Kansara, Junjie Li, Zach Logar, Aleena Masaeng, Noah McNeany, Regina Park, and advisors Michael Titus and Kevin Trumble. The team will receive $1500, along with $500 travel assistance. Third prize goes to Michigan Technological University for “Mitigation of Boron Impurities from Recycled Steel in Cast Iron.” Team members include Andrew Walch, Abigail Armstrong, Sophia Brylinski, Trent Graham, Mary Schafer, and advisors Walter Milligan and Paul Sanders. The team will receive $1000, along with $500 travel assistance. Nomination Deadline for the 2024 Class of Fellows is Fast Approaching The honor of Fellow of the Society was established to provide recognition to ASM members for distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and to develop a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society. Criteria for the Fellow award include: • Outstanding accomplishments in materials science or engineering • Broad and productive achievement in production, manufacturing, management, design, development, research, or education • Five years of current, continuous ASM membership Deadline for nominations for the class of 2024 is November 30, 2023. CANADA COUNCIL AWARDS ASM Nominating Committee Nominations Due December 15 ASM International is seeking members to serve on the 2024 ASM Nominating Committee. The committee will select a nominee for 2024-2025 vice president who will serve as senior vice president in 2025-2026 and president in 2026-2027. The Nominating Committee will also select three trustee nominees for 2024-2027. Candidates for this committee can only be proposed by a Chapter through its executive committee, an ASM committee or council, or an affiliate society board. Nominations are due December 15.
