William Park Woodside founded our Society as the Steel Treaters Club more than 100 years ago and later served as president of ASM. The scholarship was established to support an ASM student member studying materials science and engineering at the junior or senior level who demonstrates strength in leadership, character, and academics. Tuition of up to $10,000 for one academic year and a certificate of recognition are awarded to the recipient. Josh Baston University of Wisconsin–Madison Josh Baston is an incoming senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in materials science and engineering. He first got excited about metallurgy in middle school when he found out how to quench harden homemade 1080 steel knives in his firepit. At UW-Madison, Baston researches the oxidation and deformation characteristics of high-temperature Mo-Nb alloys for their applications in aerospace. In 2022, he conducted an internship at Oshkosh Corporation and spent summer 2023 at the Karlsruhe Institute für Technologie (KIT) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, continuing his research on refractory alloys. Upon graduation, Baston plans to pursue a Ph.D. in physical metallurgy or additive manufacturing and embark on a research career in either the aerospace or energy production industries. The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship was established in 2006 through a generous bequest by the couple. It serves as an expression of their commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Tuition of up to $10,000 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. Shane Gallagher Rutgers University–New Brunswick Shane Gallagher is a senior studying materials science and engineering at Rutgers University. He discovered his passion for materials science through the Penn Summer Science Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania. At Rutgers, he has been an avid participant in undergraduate research and is currently studying the synthesis of ultra-high temperature ceramics. He also serves on the executive board of his school’s Material Advantage and Tau Beta Pi chapters. Last summer, he was a research and development intern at BD studying elastomer degradation. This summer, he was a materials and processes engineer at Pratt & Whitney working in their x-ray diffraction laboratory. Gallagher plans to pursue a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering starting in fall 2024. George A. Roberts Scholarships The George A. Roberts Scholarships were established in 1995 through a generous contribution from Dr. George A. Roberts, FASM, past president and retired CEO of Teledyne, to the ASM Foundation as an expression of his
