He visited the Pune Chapter in November 2022 followed by Gujarat and Bangalore in February of this year. Navin Manjooran joined him on the Pune trip where they learned that a large focus is placed on diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as strategies to keep young people involved. The Gujarat Chapter has an excellent relationship with materials science departments in colleges in that area, in addition to strong relationships with companies and technical universities. The Bangalore Chapter organizes a great number of activities that attract members. While in Bangalore, Carlone had a dinner meeting with chapter officers, met the Material Advantage student members, and greeted dignitaries at the National Aerospace Laboratory. At the National Aerospace Laboratory, from left: Prof. Nataraj J R, INC Secretary; Prof. Pierpaolo Carlone, ASM Trustee; Mrs. Jyothi Sriram, Bangalore Chapter chair; Dr. Abhay Anant Pashilkar, Director of National Aerospace Laboratory; Dr. Ramesh Kumar, M Head of Advance Composites Division of NAL; and Mr. Prakash Balasubramanyam, Chapter secretary. An attentive Hartford group listens to Charlie Kuehmann share his experiences developing novel materials for electric vehicles and space. Student participants at Peoria’s 2023 Materials Camp. and for Our Next One!” Kuehmann shared that our imagination is the driver and our materials are being tested to get us to the future. Often, it’s the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) challenges that enable these materials. They also help to form the goals the materials are developed to meet by SpaceX and Tesla. Kuehmann has been a leader in computational materials design since its inception. He is currently VP materials engineering and NDE for both Tesla and SpaceX. Peoria Conducts Materials Camp The ASM Peoria Chapter organized a Materials Camp for high school students on July 17-20. In attendance at the Caterpillar Technical Center in Mossville, Illinois, were 28 students who participated in four materials engineering workshops and six team projects. Topics ranged from plastics to metallurgical design, heat treatment, NDE, corrosion, and thermal spray. The students also toured three industrial companies and participated in a halfday blacksmithing workshop where they made their own steak turners. To cap off the week, participants presented their projects to an auditorium filled with their families, other students, camp volunteers, and engineers. Several project mentors/volunteers, who are now full-time engineers, attended this camp as high school students and shared how it was a launching point for their careers. Hartford Hosts Kuehmann Charlie Kuehmann, FASM, gave an “out-of-this-world” technical talk at the ASM Hartford Chapter on August 8. His presentation, given at the CCAT Advanced Technology Center, was titled “Materials Engineering for This Planet, Chapter Award Winners To recognize outstanding Chapter achievement, ASM organizes the Chapter Awards Program. Below are the Chapters that ASM Chapter Council deemed as outstanding in the following categories: Membership Retention & Recruitment: ASM Bangalore and ASM Pune Student Outreach: ASM Gujarat, ASM Los Angeles, ASM Chennai, and ASM Detroit Innovative Programming: ASM Bangalore, ASM Pune, and ASM Detroit Communications: ASM Bangalore, ASM Pune, and ASM Detroit Young Professional Engagement: ASM Bangalore and ASM Boston
