HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | SEPTEMBER 2023 57 Prof. Bo G. Sundman Named the 2024 Recipient of the J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award ASM is pleased to announce that Prof. Bo G. Sundman, professor emeritus, OpenCalphad, Gif-sur-Yvette, France, is the 2024 J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award recipient. His citation reads: “For foundational contributions to the development of CALPHAD models and the Thermo-Calc software that substantially accelerated the worldwide adoption of computational thermodynamics and kinetics.” The Gibbs Award was established in 2007 to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of phase equilibria. The award honors J. Willard Gibbs, one of America’s greatest theoretical scientists. Originally proposed by the ASM Alloy Phase Diagram Committee, the award supports ASM’s strong brand identity and reputation in the field of phase diagrams. The J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award is endowed by QuesTek Innovations LLC. In addition to many other contributions, Gibbs laid the thermodynamics foundations of phase equilibria with his brilliant essay, “On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Substances,” published in 1876 and in 1878 in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy. 2023 AWARD PROGRAM HONOREES Ikuhara Named 2023 Henry Clifton Sorby Awardee Yuichi Ikuhara, the 48th Sorby awardee, is the director of the institute of Engineering Innovation in the School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. He is world renowned in the field of interface science in materials, and for his work in advanced electron microscopy. The Sorby Award is presented annually to an internationally recognized figure for lifetime achievement in the fields of metallography and materials science. Recipients are acknowledged for their contributions and dedication to research, teaching, and/or laboratory sales and service. Ikuhara’s Sorby Award Lecture, entitled “Grain Boundary Atomic Structures, Segregation, Dynamics in Ceramics,” will be held at IMAT 2023 in Detroit on Tuesday, October 17, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Huntington Place, Detroit’s convention center. The Sorby lecture is part of a three-day IMS Symposium at IMAT on “Characterization of Materials & Microstructure through Metallography, Image Analysis, & Mechanical Testing - Fundamental & Applied Studies.” Prof. Ikuhara will receive his award at the ASM Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 17, 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. Sundman Ikuhara International Metallographic Contest at IMAT Deadline: September 29 The International Metallographic Contest (IMC), an annual contest cosponsored by the International Metallographic Society (IMS) and ASM International to advance the science of microstructural analysis, will be held at IMAT 2023 in Detroit, October 16-19. Six different classes of competition cover all fields of optical and electron microscopy: Class 1: Light Microscopy—All Materials Class 2: Electron Microscopy—All Materials Class 3: Student Entries—All Materials (Undergraduate Students Only) Class 4: Artistic Microscopy (Color)—All Materials Class 5: Artistic Microscopy (Black & White)—All Materials Class 6: Video Entry—Top of Choice involving defined problem (Undergraduate Students Only) Best-In-Show receives the most prestigious award available in the field of metallography, the Jacquet-Lucas Award, which includes a cash prize of $3000. For a complete description of the rules, tips for creating a winning entry, and judging guidelines, visit asminternational.org/web/ims/membership/imc or contact IMC chair, Ellen Rabenberg, at ellen.m.rabenberg@nasa.gov.
