HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2023 70 IN MEMORIAM Vincent G. LeGendre of Osterville, Massachusetts, passed away suddenly on June 7 at the age of 81. LeGendre was born on November 3, 1941. He was raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and attended Central Catholic High School and Wentworth Institute. He served honorably in the Army Reserves, became an advertising manager for Watts Regulator, and then moved into business-to-business publications as an advertising representative. He served as the publisher of ASM International’s Advanced Materials & Processes magazine until his retirement in 2007. Lendell E. Steele, FASM, a life member of ASM, passed away on November 15, 2022, in Springfield, Virginia, at the age of 94. Steele grew up in North Carolina and attended Mars Hill College. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from George Washington University in 1950 and a master’s in economics from American University in 1959. He served in the Air Force from 1951-1953. Steele worked for the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) for 38 years, retiring in 1986 as associate superintendent of the Materials Science and Technology Division and head of the Thermostructural Materials Branch. He was responsible for managing research on advanced structural materials with an emphasis on combined environmental effects. His work at NRL led to the development of a research team that provided solutions to the phenomenon of neutron irradiation embrittlement of steels. After retiring, he provided technical consultation related to the environmental degradation of materials in components for power systems. Steele was elected a Fellow of ASM International in 1974. He was a member of the American Society of Testing and Materials International for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Federation of Materials Societies, the American Nuclear Society, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. His research, publications, and lectures helped lead to the safety of nuclear power systems worldwide. Arthur William Ruff, FASM, 92, a retired research scientist with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, died on April 24. Ruff was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 18, 1930, and attended Rice University from 1948 to 1952, earning a Bachelor of Science in physics. He received his master’s degree from the University of Arizona in 1953 and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1964. He became a Fellow of ASM International in 1983 and received the George Kimball Burgess award from the local ASM Washington D.C. Chapter in 1984. Ruff became a Fellow of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) in 1989 and received the ASTM Award of Merit in 1989. He also received the U.S. Department of Commerce Silver Medal in 1970. He was known as an excellent scientist and administrator. Ruff joined the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) in 1957 where he worked in the Metallurgy Division and conducted research on the role of defects in mechanical behavior. He held several research and management positions including metallurgy division chief. In 1987, Ruff transferred to the Ceramics Division and carried out studies on wear/friction of metals and ceramics until retiring in 1994. Ramaswamy (Vis) Viswanathan, FASM, passed away in Coimbatore, India, on June 12. With an early education in metallurgy at the Indian Institute of Science, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Florida and Carnegie Mellon University. Viswanathan had a distinguished career, initially at the Westinghouse Corp., and then for many years at EPRI, Palo Alto, Calif. He retired as senior manager of materials and technical fellow. He will be remembered for his visionary research and development, and contributions to reliability, availability, and life extension of electric power plant components. He was also the author of books on high-temperature materials for advanced fossil generation power plants. Viswanathan was recognized with the ASM William Hunt Eisenman Award in 2006.
