HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2023 68 CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS Chicagoland Student Poster Competition The Illinois Tech Material Advantage Chapter and ASM Chicago Chapter co-organized a Chicagoland Student Poster Competition on April 19. Students from Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois Chicago, and Northwestern University participated. More than 30 students, judges, and volunteers made this poster competition a great event for all involved. Congratulations to the following winners as well as all student contestants! • First place: Changlong Chen (Ph.D. student at Illinois Tech) • Second place: Lindsay Chaney (Ph.D. student at Northwestern) • Third place: Broderick Lewis (Ph.D. student at Northwestern) MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Pollock First Woman to Win Acta Gold Tresa Pollock, FASM, interim dean of UC Santa Barbara’s College of Engineering, was recognized by her peers with the 2023 Acta Materialia Gold Medal, a top honor bestowed in recognition of the significant and lasting impact of her materials research and leadership in the field. Pollock, the Alcoa Distinguished Professor of Materials, is the first woman in the 50-year history of the medal to receive the award from Acta Materialia Inc., a non-profit organization that represents 36 professional societies and publishes preeminent materials journals. Pollock received the award during the 152nd annual meeting of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). She was cited for “extraordinary contributions to the metallurgical field as an inspiring educator, a creative technologist, an exceptional colleague, and a visionary leader of the TMS community.” Todd Elected by ASME Judith A. Todd, FASM, was elected an Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The designation “is awarded for a lifetime of service to engineering or related fields.” The award was presented to Todd at the society’s Annual Leadership Meeting in St. Louis on June 6. Todd is department head and P.B. Breneman Chair emerita, and professor of engineering science and mechanics at Penn State University. She is immediate past president of ASM International, having served as president (2021-2022) and trustee (2017-2023). She also served as SES president (2009) and was vice president for manufacturing with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2002-2005). Todd has published more than 100 technical papers and holds two U.S. patents. She received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in materials science from Cambridge University and is a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom. Singh Wins Innovation Medal Professor Raj N. Singh, FASM, was selected to receive The American Ceramic Society’s 2023 Rishi Raj Medal for Innovation and Commercialization in Ceramics. The award was established to recognize a member of the ceramics and glass research community for exceptional discovery or invention(s) that can, or have, led to innovative products and/or processes. Singh is a Regents Professor at Oklahoma State University where he also served as the Lindsay Chaney explains the technical details of her poster.
