The awards program recognizes achievements of members of the materials science and engineering community. Awards will be presented at ASM’s Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 17, during IMAT 2023 in Detroit. Tickets for the Awards Dinner can be ordered by using the IMAT registration form. Honorary Membership Prof. James C. Williams, FASM, The Ohio State University, Columbus, will receive this year’s award “for leadership in developing and implementing new and enhanced aircraft materials, and for excellence in engineering education and student mentoring at two different universities, Carnegie Mellon and Ohio State.” Honorary Membership in the Society was established in 1919 to recognize distinguished service to the materials science and engineering profession, ASM strategic plan and initiatives, and the progress of mankind. Medal for the Advancement of Research Dr. Ajit V. Sapre, group president, research and technology, Reliance Industries Ltd., Navi Mumbai, India, will receive this year’s award “for dedicated efforts to promote advancement of materials science and technology for the energy sector through people development and translation of research to technology involving academia, industry, and researchers.” The award was established in 1943, to honor an executive in an organization that produces, fabricates, or uses metals and other materials. The recipient, over a period of years, shall have consistently sponsored research or development and by foresight and actions, will have helped substantially advance the arts and sciences related to materials science and engineering. Distinguished Life Membership Mr. Sajjan Jindal, chairman and managing director, JSW Group, Mumbai, India, will receive this year’s award “for continued and dedicated service to the field of metallurgy and materials and for his philanthropic service to the society, especially for underprivileged women and children and for the support to COVID patients.” Distinguished Life Membership was established in 1954 and is conferred on those leaders who have devoted their time, knowledge, and abilities to the advancement of the materials industries. Gold Medal Prof. Julie M. Schoenung, FASM, professor and founding chair, materials science and engineering, University of California, Irvine, will receive this year’s award “for significant contributions to our understanding of nanostructured metals and composites, and for excellence in the application of scientific and engineering principles to diversified and important problems in green engineering.” The medal was established in 1943 to recognize outstanding knowledge and great versatility in the application of science to the field of materials science and engineering, as well as exceptional ability in the diagnosis and solution of diversified materials problems.
