iTSSe TSS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2023 55 iTSSe TSS • Prof. Hanlin Liao (Université de Technologie de Belfort-Montbéliard, France) • Prof. Sotiris E. Pratsinis (ETH Zürich, Switzerland), 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Fellow The first four authors of this list were also on Stanford University’s top 2% most-cited world scientists list published in 2020 in PLOS Biology and led by Prof. John P.A. Ioannidis (“Updated Science-wide Author Databases of Standardized Citation Indicators”)[1]. This work was discussed in more detail in the July/August 2021 edition of the iTSSe newsletter[2]. CONCLUSIONS The work described in this article may still allow room for improvement, typically, by looking to differentiate how research is recognized by peers, through removing self- citations in the h-index calculation, or expanding the number of studied metrics. While the consideration of h-indexes may be controversial, it is nevertheless interesting to paint a portrait of the community and identify perspective evolutions for young and seasoned scientists, some of whom may aspire to great recognitions that go beyond the thermal spray field alone. Finally, it is worth noting that this work only paints a partial portrait as patents and contributions by more industry-oriented researchers is not necessarily captured. Hence, the value provided by the Thermal Spray Society to unite and highlight the work of the entire community is all the more significant. ~iTSSe FEATURE For more information: Andre C.
