ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2023 48 iTSSe TSS iTSSe TSS SOCIETY NEWS HALL OF FAME AWARDEES The ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS) is pleased to welcome the following 2023 honorees into the TSS Hall of Fame: Michel Jeandin and Shrikant Joshi. Dr. Michel Jeandin, FASM, was born in 1955 in Rouen, France, and graduated as an engineer from École Centrale de Lyon in 1977. He was awarded a Ph.D. by the School of Mines in Paris in 1981 for a study of liquid phase sintering. He remained at School of Mines/Paris for the duration of his career, except for three short detachments at the Imperial College, London, the E.U. Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, and Framatome in Paris, for work on high-energy beam processing and surface engineering. His major involvement during more than 30 years as a professor at the School of Mines/Paris, was in the thermal spray area. He founded and headed up the Center for Spray Processing for more than 25 years. Jeandin participated actively in the development and promotion of cold spray through the launch and management of numerous programs on process fundamentals and resulting coatings. He also founded and was 15-year chair of the international Cold Spray Club. He authored and co-authored 171 publications in refereed journals and has 18 patents and two trademarks. Jeandin received several Best Paper/Best Contribution awards, the IFHTSE Medal in 2022, the THERMEC’2016 Distinguished Award, and became an ASM Fellow in 2004. He also was made a Knight (2008) and Officer (2021) of the Order of the Academic Palms. Jeandin has been active with ASM for more than 40 years and often participated in thermal spray events as author, session or conference chair, panelist, guest or co-editor, or invited speaker. After retirement from his academic position in 2021, Jeandin cofounded a simplified joint-stock company (French SAS), namely CPAMAL, a French acronym for Center for Thermal Spray for Arts and Crafts and Luxury Industry. He currently serves as special adviser to the executive chairman. Jeandin was recognized for “for original and sustained contributions to thermal spray, primarily cold spray through the understanding of coating buildup and particle interface phenomena under shock conditions.” Prof. Shrikant Joshi, FASM, born in Hyderabad, India, in 1960, is a chemical engineer, having obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of Idaho, respectively. He is a professor in the Department of Engineering Science at University West, Sweden, and has been engaged in thermal spray activities for over 35 years. After moving to India following his Ph.D., Joshi had long stints at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) and the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI)—two premier federally funded materials research laboratories in India. From 1989 to 2015, he played a pivotal role in pioneering science and technology of thermal spraying in India, through practice and education. His initiatives helped spur the growth of thermal spraying in India by showcasing previously unavailable technologies to local industry as well as laying the foundation for workforce training. Thermal spray education and outreach has been a passion for Joshi, and he has been instrumental in organizing numerous schools to promote thermal spraying in Indian industry and to encourage them to make it a part of the curriculum. He also played a lead role in bringing the Asian Thermal Spray Conference series to India for the very first time in 2014. Joshi moved to Sweden in 2015 and has contributed to building a substantial thermal spray group at University West. The R&D activities that he currently steers continue to strike a balance between advancing science and developing applications of specific interest to industrial partners. Joshi’s work has led to a dozen patent applications and nearly 225 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is a Fellow of ASM International, the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He also received coveted accolades in India in recognition of his varied contributions to advancement of thermal spraying that have bridged basic research, technology development and its transfer for industrial implementation. Joshi was recognized for “for sustained R&D activities and pioneering efforts in thermal spray education and technology demonstration and contributing to the global thermal spray knowledge base.” 3 ASM THERMAL SPRAY SOCIETY AWARDEES HONORED AT ITSC 2023 Jeandin Joshi
