HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2023 70 IN MEMORIAM Richard G. Hoagland, FASM, of Sante Fe, New Mexico, passed away at age 82. He spent the bulk of his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 1990, when named an ASM Fellow, he was cited “for sustained excellence in research on fracture mechanics and fracture toughness of materials, and for outstanding teaching of materials science.” Hoagland was also a professor and instructor. Rabindra Nath Mahapatra, FASM, 80, of Baldwin, Missouri, passed away on April 11. He was born in Puri, Orissa, India, on December 1, 1942, and attended Banaras Hindu University where he earned a degree in materials science and engineering. He moved to the United States in 1970, settling down first in New Jersey and then in Pennsylvania where he earned a Ph.D. from Lehigh University. Mahapatra later continued his innovative work on high-temperature crystal materials as a senior staff scientist for the U.S. Navy’s Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) in Maryland. During his distinguished career, Mahapatra co-authored numerous papers, received several patents, and was honored at the international level as a distinguished ASM Fellow in 2004. Michael J. Wheeler, 88, of Kingston, U.K., died on July 22, 2022. He was born in England on June 21, 1934, and grew up in Salisbury. Wheeler was educated at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury and then studied at the University of Bristol, earning his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in physics, focusing on metallurgy. After finishing his Ph.D. in 1959, he joined Alcan at their research laboratories in Banbury, England, and then moved to their Kingston lab in 1971. He transferred to Alcan’s Detroit office in 1980 and later to Cleveland, before returning to Kingston in 1987 as the director of research for Alcan International. There he oversaw 500 research and development staff in Canada and the United Kingdom in support of Alcan’s businesses in over 20 countries. For 10 years following his retirement in 1999, Wheeler consulted for various organizations, including the Aluminum Association and the U.S. Department of Energy. He traveled the world to work with many automotive companies, including Ford, its then subsidiary Jaguar, General Motors, Porsche, and others to advance the use of aluminum in automotive applications. With other Alcan colleagues, Wheeler is credited as a co-inventor on three U.S. patents: for an aluminum alloy suitable for building vehicles; sorting scrap metal; and heat treating aluminum alloy sheet metal. He was recognized in 1994 by The Aluminium Federation in the U.K. for his outstanding contribution to the domestic aluminum industry, and in 1999 in the U.S. as the recipient of The Aluminum Association’s first annual Marlan T. Boultinghouse Service Award for his efforts to promote the use of aluminum in automotive applications. Word has been received at ASM Headquarters of the death of Life Members Melvyn “Mel” George Cowgill of Yaphank, N.Y., who served as the membership coordinator of the ASM Long Island Chapter; David W. Schulz, FASM, of Belmont, Calif., formerly of the Boeing Company; and Joseph Anthony von Fraunhofer, FASM, who passed away in December 2022 and worked at the University of Maryland, Baltimore before retirement.
