HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2023 68 What attracted you to engineering? Silly Putty. I was always drawn “like a moth to a flame” to home-science projects, like taking stuff apart that I wasn’t supposed to when I was a kid. Then I got fascinated with Silly Putty and wanted to know how it worked. I went into materials science to work with gooey things. But then I became a metallurgist! It was a bit of an unconventional path. Best career advice, given or received: If you want to become an engineer, do it because you love it! What are you working on now? Other than resistance-based sintering, I am working with my team on an exciting “mapping” project that combines statistics, design of experiments (DOE), and spatial projection mathematics to create a predictive model that enables full data base predictions of a small group of tested materials. Tell us about your involvement with ASM. Why are you a member? I joined ASM my sophomore year of college, when my advisor recommended that we go to the MS&T conference in Montreal. ASM was celebrating its 100th anniversary that year. I have been highly involved both on the student board and on committees since then. I’m a founding member of the Advanced Manufacturing Committee. Favorite motto or quote? Shoot for the moon because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. Most recent book or podcast? “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern. Do you know someone who should be featured in an upcoming Face of Materials Engineering profile? Contact Vicki Burt at vicki.burt@asminternational.org. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Todd Elected SES Fellow Judith A. Todd, FASM, was elected a Fellow of the Society of Engineering Science (SES). The SES Fellow honor is highly selective and recognizes members of the Society “who have contributed significantly to the activities of the SES and who have had a major impact on the advance of the engineering sciences by independent, original research, or who have rendered some other exceptional service to the cause of the sciences.” The 2023 Class of Fellows will be officially recognized at the 60th annual meeting of SES in Minneapolis, October 8-11. Todd is department head and P.B. Breneman Chair emerita, and professor of engineering science and mechanics at Penn State University. She is immediate past president of ASM International, having served as president (2021-2022) and trustee (2017-2023). She also served as SES president (2009) and was vice president for manufacturing with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (20022005). Todd has published more than 100 technical papers and holds two U.S. patents. She received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in materials science from Cambridge University and is a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom. IHEA Announces 2023-2024 Board ASM members Bob Fincken of Super Systems Inc., Cincinnati, and Doug Glenn of Heat Treat Today, New Castle, Pa., were reappointed to the board of the Industrial Heating Equipment Association (IHEA) for the 20232024 term. Helen Tuttle (pictured) from WS Thermal Process Technology Inc., Lorain, Ohio, was named the first woman to serve on the IHEA board of directors in its 94-year history. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS LA Explores Microscopy Professor Kai He of the University of California, Irvine was the featured speaker at the Los Angeles Chapter general meeting on March 16. He spoke on “Advanced Electron Microscopy: A Versatile Toolbox for Solving Real World Challenges in Materials Science.” The speaker used case studies to illustrate the use of transmission electron microscopy for modern materials challenges with batteries, fuel cells, and nuclear reactor materials.
