HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2023 67 High school students gain hands-on experience in ASM’s Microscopy Lab during Eisenman Materials Camp 2022. EMERGING PROFESSIONALS about pursuing the field. This is why the ASM Foundation is eager to expand the program and increase the number of partners joining us on this journey. As the ASM Foundation moves ahead in the next few years, we look forward to having more individuals, organizations, universities, and others participate in the work of further developing the program in both depth and breadth. John “Chip” Keough, FASM Chair, ASM Materials Education Foundation EMERGING PROFESSIONALS EPC Launches Mentorship Subcommittee The ASM International Emerging Professionals Committee (EPC) is developing a new subcommittee focused on mentorship, called “EP-ment.” The goal of the subcommittee is to establish a platform for students and emerging professionals to connect and engage with their peers. In this way, we aim to foster an environment that encourages and facilitates interaction between mentors and prospective mentees, helping them to achieve their professional goals. EP-ment has identified key objectives that will support development of this program, including targeted webinars, chapter engagement, and outreach activities. The subcommittee is committed to gathering feedback through post-event surveys, in order to provide content that meets the needs of emerging professionals and students. Further, recorded webinars will offer a breadth of topics such as sharing of mentors/mentees, dealing with harassment, career coaching, and solving EPC technical issues. This content will be cloud-accessible and thus available for both first-time use and to refresh knowledge. Reaching out and engaging with local and student ASM Material Advantage chapters is a key part of the strategy, to establish connections as early and effectively as possible. Through joint activities with chapters, such as hosted webinars, meetings, and events, EP-ment aims to bolster this connection. EP-ment is developing an action plan that will be implemented within a one or two-year timeframe. Steps include: 1) Grow the webinar series and cultivate a network of recurring talks/speakers; 2) implement career-coaching topics coupled with the EPC platform to foster networking and mentorship; 3) continue outreach activities to local chapters, establishing contact lists; and 4) facilitate a networking event at IMAT 2023, where EP-ment will host an open forum on professional development. Current members of EP-ment represent the diverse background of ASM and the EPC in particular, and come from academia and industry alike. Members include Alexandra Merkouriou, Madilyn Jerke, Kenna Ritter, Ho Lun Chan, and Benjamin Adam. We invite you to contact us at emergingprof@asminternational.org. THE FACE OF MATERIALS ENGINEERING This profile series features members from around the world at all stages in their careers. Here we speak with Olga Eliseeva, project engineer at EWI, Columbus, Ohio What is your engineering background? My undergraduate degree is from Case Western Reserve University and my Ph.D. was earned at Texas A&M University. Both degrees are in materials science and engineering. What does your typical workday look like? My day can include any of the following: meeting with a client, writing a proposal, working in the lab, or doing all three at the same time. The reason I love this job is because I don’t have an everyday routine. What part of your job do you like most? I love being able to learn something new every day. I came to EWI as a materials scientist, and in two years I have become an expert in welding engineering. It has been exciting to present on topics that I didn’t know much about a year ago. What is your greatest professional achievement? I’m involved in a new technique, resistance-based sintering, that has gained a huge amount of interest in the last year and a half. It may end up being a highlight of my career, but I’m still very much in the middle of it. Eliseeva
