HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2023 62 2023 LECTURERS ANNOUNCED 2023 ASM/TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials and Society Monday, October 16 | 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Dr. Viola L. Acoff Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Mississippi, Oxford “Reimagining the Development of a 21st Century Workforce to Address Society’s Need for Materials Engineering and Technology” It is well known that materials have been vital to the development of civilization and technological advances. For example, the major periods of the prehistoric era are named after the materials that were used to advance and improve the lives of humans: the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age. The field of materials engineering continues to have a fundamental role in technological advances in the 21st century. Yet, the public often attributes the technological contributions to society that are made by our profession to other disciplines. The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Profiles of Engineering and Engineering Technology reports that fewer metallurgical/materials degrees were awarded in 2021 than in 2019, with the largest decreases occurring in the number of bachelor’s degrees (decreased by over 250) and doctoral degrees (decreased by nearly 200) awarded. In 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that women made up 50.5% of the U.S. population. The Bureau also projects that over the next 40 years, the United States will continue the trend of becoming a more racially and ethnically diverse society. However, these demographics are underrepresented in materials engineering like most engineering disciplines. To develop the workforce needed to effectively address society’s need for technological advances for the 21st century and beyond, it is necessary that we reimagine how we build and maintain the pipeline for materials scientists and engineers to be more in line with the demographics of our society. The 2023 Alpha Sigma Mu lecturer will be announced in the July/August issue of AM&P. ASM Minnesota Chapter. He is also a board member of the Twin Cities Section of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and a technical editor for Tribology & Lubrication Technology. In recent years, he has served as chair of the ASM Technical Books Committee, chair of the ASM Minnesota Chapter, president of the Minnesota Microscopy Society, and chair of the Twin Cities Section of STLE. He has also served numerous times as a U.S. National Science Foundation grant review panelist, journal referee, international conference organizer, and session chair. Yang is a Fellow of ASM International and an awardwinning materials scientist, accomplished corporate executive, and founder of a successful nanotechnology development and services company. He has over 30 years of experience spanning critical areas in higher education, research and development, national and international business development, sales and marketing, engineering, manufacturing, customer service, and organizational growth. As the founder and president, he leads Ebatco’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited analytical and testing lab services. Before founding Ebatco, Yang was the vice president of commercialization for Hysitron Inc. LECTURERS ASM Nominations The ASM International Constitution provides that members of the Society may submit additional nominations after the Nominating Committee has made its official report.
