Hoffman is also responsible for the DOE Office of Environmental Management Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program, which offers internships, postdoctoral research, graduate fellow positions, and research award opportunities for students and faculty at minority serving institutions. Other opportunities for academics to collaborate with SRNL directed by Hoffman include the Office of Science – Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists visiting faculty program. Hoffman serves as a member of the National Laboratory Education Directors Council and is a fellow of the Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program. She is a Fellow of ASM International, a recipient of ASM International’s Silver Medal Award, and a member of the Board of Trustees from 2020-2023. Hoffman holds a B.S. and Ph.D. from Drexel University in materials science and engineering. She became active in ASM International with the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter as a graduate student. Since then, she has been active in the Savannah River Chapter and is a member of Chapter Council and multiple award committees. Most recently, she led the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board Task Force. Mr. Lawrence A. Somrack Nominee for Treasurer Lawrence A. Somrack is retired president of NSL Analytical Services Inc. Since joining the company in 1993, he has been at the forefront of testing method development for the aerospace, ceramic, and medical industries. In 1999, he became NSL’s majority shareholder and president. Somrack developed a strategic plan and implemented programs to grow as a premier chemistry testing laboratory before successfully selling the company in 2020 to May River Capital. Somrack was actively involved in working with test method development for additive manufacturing products using 3D printing with metal powders. He has also been influential in bringing about substantial improvements and additional testing with ASTM, EU, and NIST/Brammer (Standard Reference Materials). As a child, Somrack was excited to accompany his father to ASM’s headquarters to observe construction of the Dome. This was the beginning of his lifelong connection with ASM International. In 1994, Somrack joined the ASM Cleveland Chapter and as a committee co-chair was instrumental in developing a popular four-day training program showcasing various testing methods. Somrack served on the ASM Board of Trustees from 2018-2021, has been a Sustaining Member since 2005, the global leadership team of Siemens AG with oversight for international collaborations, advanced technologies, and innovation. Since 2010, Manjooran has served as an adjunct professor in materials science and engineering at Virginia Tech University and is a board member of the U.S. Technology Advisory Group. He taught multiple courses and co-organized 35 international symposia for the National Institute of Technology (India), University of Florida, Virginia Tech, and various professional societies including ASM International, ACerS, AIST, ASME, IEEE, and TMS. Manjooran also serves as chair of the advisory board for the materials science and engineering department at the University of Florida. He has also served on the Virginia Tech University Board of Visitors, University of Chicago Board of Trustees, Massachusetts Institute of Technology energy initiative board, and Virginia Tech Capital Campaign. He holds a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from the National Institute of Technology (India), an M.S. in materials science and engineering from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Virginia Tech. He also has an MBA from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. Manjooran has been awarded 12 patents, edited 12 books, and delivered more than 100 presentations/ publications at national and international events. His awards include: Outstanding University of Florida Alumni (MSE), Outstanding Indian American (Engineering) Award, Distinguished Virginia Tech (VT) Alumnus, TMS Young Leader Award, VT Outstanding Leader Award, VT Paul Torgersen Doctoral Research Excellence Award, VT Outstanding Service Commendation Award, VT Outstanding Student Award, NITW Sri Kabadi Subalu Medal, and the NITW Alumni Association Gold Medal. Dr. Elizabeth N. Hoffman, FASM Nominee for Vice President Elizabeth (Liz) N. Hoffman is the director of innovation and university engagement at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), a Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory focused on applied science for nuclear materials and processing solutions. Hoffman is responsible for SRNL’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program, providing opportunities for workforce development, scientific and technical vitality, and mission agility for the DOE.
