FEATURE ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2023 54 In 2017, ASM’s Heat Treating Society R&D Committee established a new recognition for the best papers in the heat treating industry each year. To be considered for the ASM HTS Prime Contributor recognition, papers must appear in HTPro, be published in ASM’s Heat Treat conference proceedings, or be presented at IMAT or an HTS-affiliated conference. All manuscripts from industrial companies (excluding universities and national labs) are automatically considered on an annual basis. The aim of the honor is twofold—to recognize outstanding industry-focused manuscripts and to encourage submissions to both HTPro and the Heat Treat conference, which is held every other year. JUDGING PROCESS The HTS R&D Committee, currently chaired by Michael Pershing of Caterpillar Inc., selects and awards the winners. Typically, a three-person subcommittee narrows the list to five or six of the most outstanding papers given at an HTS Conference or published in HTPro and written by authors from industry. The full committee then votes to select the top two papers for the Prime Contributor recognition. In instances where a committee member is an author or co-author of a contending paper, they recuse themselves from voting. The judging rubric includes the following criteria: • New technology differentiation • Effectiveness of the experimental plan and conclusions • Technical competence • Breadth of possible application • Information is easy to read and understand Additional considerations include papers that present a high-quality study with solid experimental methods.
