FEATURE ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2023 53 ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR STUDENTS AND EMERGING PROFESSIONALS AT HEAT TREAT 2023 Heat Treat 2023 in Detroit has many opportunities for students and emerging professionals to get involved. The show, October 17-19, offers a variety of technical programming, competitions, and social events. More information and links to sign up can be found at heattreatevent.org under the Students/EP tab. DomesDay. Can your dome take the weight and protect an egg? ASM’s Geodesic Dome Design Competition, DomesDay, sponsored by MTS, features 10 teams competing for the best design. Registration deadline has been extended to August 30 and a limited number of participation grants are available. HTS Strong Bar Competition. The submission deadline has passed but this is a must-see event on the show floor. Student teams will heat treat steel bar to achieve the highest combination of bending strength and bend deflection. This is a two-phase competition that begins with a poster competition, describing the team’s heat treatment method, the hardness profile, and micro- structure. During phase two, teams will heat treat the specimen according to their best choice. The bars will be tested on the exhibit show floor to determine the winners. Passport Program. This new and interactive contest will help guide you through the conference to encourage you to learn and see more. Additional details will be available soon. ASM Career Connections. Heat Treat attendees will be able to connect with hiring companies to learn more about their opportunities. Stay tuned for more information. This competition-based award and recognition program seeks to encourage participation of young scientists in the ASM Heat Treating Society, and to provide attractive offers and opportunities in the worldwide thermal processing community. Abstracts based on thermal processing of metal/metal containing components are considered for this program. This is a two-phase competition encom- passing a poster competition, as well as an oral presentation competition for semifinalists. 4
