HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | M A R C H 2 0 2 3 6 4 MEMBERS IN THE NEWS MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Liu and Zhao Tour Historical Landmark Zi-Kui Liu, FASM, Penn State University, and Ji-Cheng (JC) Zhao, FASM, University of Maryland, visited the Ytterby Mine on Resaro Island in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden, at the end of May. The mine was designated an ASM Historical Landmark in 1989. Four elements—yttrium, terbium, erbium, and ytterbium— were initially isolated from the black stone gadolinite mined there and were named after the mine. Later, scandium, holmium, thulium, and gadoliniumwere also discovered on the site. The ASM past president and past trustee were on travel to a CALPHAD conference in Sweden and took in the mine as a side excursion. McDonald Visits India André McDonald, FASM, (shown right) recently traveled to India and had an opportunity to visit with Kantesh Balani, professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur on January 18. McDonald is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST) and an ASM trustee. Balani is an associate editor on JTST and works on student programming with the Thermal Spray Society. McDonald was on travel for the University of Alberta, where he serves as associate vice president of strategic research initiatives and performance. The university and the High Commission of Canada in India were leading a workshop in New Delhi on “The Future of Energy: Energy Transition, New Energy Solutions, and Climate Change.” AAAS Honors ASM Members On January 31, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) announced the election of 505 scientists, engineers, and innovators from around the world and across all disciplines to the 2022 Class of AAAS Fellows. Among the inductees are several ASM members: Ram Devanathan, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Carol Handwerker, FASM, Purdue University; John H. Perepezko, FASM, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Julie Schoenung, FASM, pictured, University of California, Irvine; and Ji-Cheng (JC) Zhao, FASM, University of Maryland. The newly elected Fellows are being recognized for their scientific achievements spanning their careers. Each will receive a certificate along with a gold and blue rosette pin and will be celebrated in Washington this summer. Heaney Supports Career Fair Donald F. Heaney, FASM, showed commitment to the materials community through his support of a career fair in February at The Pennsylvania State University’s department of materials science and engineering (MSE). Heaney is founder and president of Advanced Powder Products Inc. (APP). He grew the company, located in Philipsburg, Pa., from the ground up to more than 150 staff. He was recently elected to the ASM Nominating Committee.
