These prestigious awards include: G. MacDonald Young Award–The ASM Canada Council established this award in 1988 to recognize distinguished and significant contributions by an ASMmember in Canada. This award consists of a plaque and a piece of Canadian native soapstone sculpture. M. Brian Ives Lectureship–This award was established in 1971 by the ASM Canada Council to identify a rent career-services operation to let our Material Advantage students know that their future remains our concern and that we can help them as they graduate and become professional materials engineers. To address these funding challenges, we can choose to cut expenses or invest in the growth of our products and services. I believe that we cannot cut our way to financial stability. Consequently, we have chosen to use our significant reserves to broaden the market for our products. At the same time, as we realign our priorities, we must ensure that the roles of our loyal staff members line up with our new strategies. In doing so, we will also change the focus of ASM from curating our materials information trove to selling it. We also must recognize the worldwide move away from printed matter to online access. Should we still be selling Handbooks, and should AM&P still arrive in your mailbox? In these post-COVID times (we hope!), we must reassess the roles of in-person vs. remote-access technical meetings and be ready to readjust our palette as the markets for such meetings evolve. The future is bright—if we get this right! ASM President David B. Williams, FASM david.williams@asminternational.org ATTENTION STUDENTS: 2023 ASM Student Paper Contest Deadline April 1 The ASM Student Paper Contest is designed to increase interest and awareness in materials science and engineering, and provide recognition for outstanding student efforts in the field.
