Co-hosted by the Material Advantage chapter at Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (MAC DUET), the event brought in more than 60 companies to meet with engineering students. Many companies collected resumes and even conducted on the spot interviews with graduating students. MAC DUET’s executive committee helped plan the event and handled onsite logistics. The day began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and concluded with a speech by the vice chancellor Dr. Faizullah Abbasi. LA Explores Additive Challenges The ASM Los Angeles Chapter featured Barbara and Ed Kanegsberg from BFK Solutions LLC as speakers at the November meeting. The couple presented a technical talk on “Critical Cleaning for a Product that is Mostly Surface: Challenges for Additive Manufacturing.” The chapter also presented a scholarship award to Abigail Jiang, a fourthyear materials science student at California Institute of Technology (CalTech). MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Cerreta Selected as Associate Lab Director Ellen K. Cerreta, FASM, is Los Alamos National Laboratory’s new associate laboratory director for physical sciences. She most recently led the Materials Science and Technology Division and brings more than 20 years of experience to the new role, which began on December 5, 2022. Cerreta is now responsible for overseeing the development and application of a broad set of capabilities in materials scienceandexperimental physics toprograms andproblems of national importance, including through the stewardship and advancement of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The directorate includes five research and development divisions, a facility operations division, two program offices, and the three Los Alamos-based national user facilities. Cerreta holds a bachelor’s of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia and master’s and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. She served on the ASM International board of trustees, 2015-2018, and volunteered 15 years as a reviewer for Materials Transactions A. Arkles Receives John Scott Award Barry Arkles, materials scientist and chemist, received the prestigious John Scott Award in November 2022. Created in 1816, the John Scott Award is presented by the Board of Directors of City Trusts of Philadelphia to men and women who contributed significantly to the “comfort, welfare, and happiness of humankind.” Past winners include Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, Jonas Salk, and the Wright brothers. Arkles’ accomplishments include contributions to medical devices, semiconductor fabrication, and diagnostics. He has published more than 150 technical articles and been awarded 75 patents on topics ranging from interpenetrating polymer networks to chemical vapor deposition, and ultra-high elongation elastomers. He also founded three technology companies during his career, the most recent being Catemer Inc., which develops biocompatible polymeric materials for medical devices and therapeutics. Arkles is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Cerreta Arkles
