Earning the Certificate of Achievement in Metallography from ASM was an invaluable experience, both because CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS LA Hosts Aluminum Expert The ASM Los Angeles Chapter held its monthly in-person meeting on September 20, at Tony P’s restaurant in Marina del Rey. The speaker was Ravi Tilak, CTO of Almex USA Inc., a manufacturer of automated equipment for aluminum billet and slab casting. In his talk on “Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace and Defense: Manufacturing Technology and Quality Control,” Tilak gave a brief overview of the development of aluminumalloys for aerospace applications from the mid-1930s until today. He summarized the important parameters that must be controlled during themanufacturing of such alloys in the form of billets and slabs for end use as rolled plate, extrusions, and forgings. The meeting was attended by over 22 engineers, scientists, and students. At the end, Chapter chair Laura Kent presented a $3000 scholarship award to Sydney Fultz-Waters, a materials engineering student at California Polytechnic State University. Material Advantage Chapters of Excellence Awards Each year, ASM administers the Chapters of Excellence (COE) Awards Program on behalf of the Material Advantage Student Program.
