ASM Hosts Data Ecosystem Webinar Series On September 29, ASM International conducted the third webinar in a series of Data Ecosystem online events focused on data management, machine learning, and uncertainty quantification. The webinar entitled “Tackling Complex Material Problems with Machine Learning and Uncertainty Quantification” included speakers from Data Ecosystem software providers PANDAT (Weisheng Cao) and SmartUQ (Gavin Jones). The main focus was to demonstrate how to make better and faster materials decisions on complex problems, and create targeted, simulation-generated, high quality materials data using the CALPHAD method inside the PANDAT platform. The webinar also developed a machine learning surrogate model to optimize relationships in a complex materials and manufacturing system. The presentations enabled attendees to visualize the relationships between variation in inputs and models, and outputs, highlighting the power of SmartUQ’s platform. ASM will host the series’ fourth webinar, “Combining Heat Treatment Simulation and Uncertainty Quantification,” on December 14. To attend or to view previous webinars, reach out to data-ecosystem@asminternational.org. FROM THE FOUNDATION Year-end Thank You It is hard to believe another year has come and gone so quickly! As always, we cannot say thank you enough to all our volunteers, Master Teachers, and donors for the endless support throughout the year. We could not be more thankful for everyone’s support that makes it all possible. Every teacher and student who comes through our programming is a stepping stone in fulfilling our mission and addressing workforce challenges in our industry. The Foundation team reaches out to new teachers every day who can change the lives of their students through STEM and materials science content. The ASM Materials Education Foundation conducted 32 Materials Camps for Teachers (27 in-person, five virtual) this summer, serving 430 teachers across the United States, Canada, and Brazil. We reached teachers in 41 U.S. states this year, and since its 2002 inception, ASM Materials Camp for Teachers has served 12,910 individual educators. These weeklong, hands-on lab experiences show educators how to use applied engineering techniques in their classrooms. They introduce teachers to methods that make math and core science principles more enticing and relevant to their middle and high school students. Materials topics motivate students in any engineering, technology, or science course as the concepts reflect in their everyday lives. Teachers participate free of charge and are eligible to receive four continuing education credits and two graduate school credits. Of course, this effort is designed to help identify, engage, and cultivate students to ultimately recruit the next generation workforce into the materials field. This holiday season, we ask for your support to maintain and grow this valuable program. I hope you will consider a generous donation to continue to provide access to hands-on, minds-on resources for teachers and students, professional development opportunities with Master Teachers and others in the field of materials science and engineering, as well as grow our ASM Materials Camps all around the world. Your donation helps us to continue offering top-notch programming to increase interest in and understanding of materials science and engineering. Please visit https:// www.asmfoundation.org/asm-donate/ and donate before December 31. If you have any questions, please reach out to me or Carrie Wilson at carrie.wilson@asminterntional.org. As always, we extend our sincerest gratitude for your support and commitment to the ASM Materials Education Foundation mission.
