Dulis Scholarship was established in 2003 and is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate member of ASM at the junior or senior level who demonstrates exemplary academic and personal achievements, as well as interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. One scholar will receive a certificate and check for $1500 toward educational expenses for one academic year. Daniel Sims Wayne State University Daniel Sims is a senior studying welding and metallurgical engineering technology at Wayne State University (WSU). His pursuit of metallurgy began while learning to weld at Washtenaw Community College (WCC), and his interest in joining ferrous and non-ferrous metals continues to grow. Sims is currently working as a weld technician at WCC, where he enjoys engaging with people new to the welding field and sharing his growing knowledge. After completing his degree at WSU, Sims plans to work as a welding engineer. 2022 Undergraduate Design Competition Winners Announced The ASM Materials Education Foundation and Design Competition Committee are pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Undergraduate Design Competition. First prize goes to Michigan Technological University for “Materials Characterization, Modeling, and Optimization of Al-Ce-Mg Alloys for Extrusion.” Team members include Nick Hopp, Jacob Klotz, Jacob Longstreth, Isabella Wakeham, advisor Paul Sanders, and industry collaborator David Weiss. The team will receive $2000, along with $500 to the department to support future design teams. Second prize goes to University of Tennessee, Knoxville for “Restoration of Musical Organs: Analysis of Rubber Cloth and Other Historical Materials.” Team members include Charlotte Buchanan, MacKenzie “Max” Camp, Matthew Valderrama, Christopher Webb, and advisor David J. Keffer. The teamwill receive $1500. Third prize goes to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for “Printable Giga- Casting Die Steel.” Team members include Ian Chen and Kyle Markland, and advisor Gregory B. Olson. The team will receive $1000. Nomination Deadline for the 2023 Class of Fellows is Fast Approaching The honor of Fellow of the Society was established to provide recognition to ASM members for distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and to develop a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society. Criteria for the Fellow award include: • Outstanding accomplishments in materials science or engineering • Broad and productive achievement in production, manufacturing, management, design, development, research, or education • Five years of current, continuous ASM membership Deadline for nominations for the class of 2023 is November 30, 2022. ASM Nominating Committee Nominations Due December 15 ASM International is seeking members to serve on the 2023 ASM Nominating Committee. The committee will select a nominee for 2023-2024 vice president who will serve as senior vice president in 2024-2025 and president in 2025-2026. The Nominating Committee will also select three trustee nominees for 2023-2026. Candidates for this committee can only be proposed by a Chapter through its executive committee, an ASM committee or council, or an affiliate society board. Nominations are due December 15.
