As the leaves start to change, fall finally begins, as does the start of another school year. This is always an exciting time for our organization as it kicks off another year of programming for our volunteers, teachers, and students. Each year allows us the opportunity to enhance and adjust our programming as needed, so we can best serve our constituents and fulfill our mission. Over the summer, close to 500 teachers and as many students engaged in hands-on experiments and learning activities that provided awareness and insight into all the STEM fields with a special emphasis on materials science and engineering. Each teacher will reach many more students, and continue to do so each year, allowing us to reach over 100,000 students each year. As students and teachers alike return to the classroom, it reminds us how important it is to continue to develop our materials science programming. Each year we have another opportunity to share this engaging content through teacher adoption in their courses, which can encourage more students to join the materials field. Our goal remains the same: To increase the number of students entering the materials science and engineering field and to promote interest in STEM in general. We continue to push this goal forward by expanding our outreach efforts, with teachers at the forefront of this goal. By reaching more teachers, we reach more students, including those who didn’t think they liked science or could be engineers. We then are able to connect them to a wide range of possible career paths. As we continue to reach more teachers, we can create a pipeline of students for the materials field. This will allow both ASM International and the ASM Foundation the opportunity to provide support and guidance on these students’ journeys in partnership with educational institutions. With your help, we will expand our support to teachers and students, making a difference in many lives. If you are interested in getting involved with the Foundation, please reach out to us today. Remember, there are a variety of ways you can contribute. To learn more about the ASM Materials Education Foundation and our mission, visit the Foundation’s website at asmfoundation.org. John “Chip” Keough, FASM Chair, ASM Materials Education Foundation ASM Introduces New Data Management Courses ASM will offer two new Data Ecosystem education courses aimed at teaching the fundamentals of data management, analytics, and materials processing: Fundamentals of Data Management for Materials September 26-28 Materials data is a valuable resource for those pursuing ways to improve products and processes and enhance the performance of their business. Data management is a broad category of digital disciplines that allow business professionals of all specialties to use data to gain insights and guide business decisions. In this three-day course, you will learn the fundamentals of data, data analytics, and data management and how it can be applied to materials in a business context. Analytical Tools for the Steel Heat Treater October 31 - November 2 In this three-day course, you will use analytical tools to gain a deeper understanding of metallurgical and heat treat processes; learn about process design and analysis using analytical tools; become familiar with how to characterize equipment and part interactions; and gain an understanding of how process and material selection effects heat treat results by using computer modeling.
