HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 2 4 5 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Laying the Foundation for a Decade of Opportunity As we prepare to reunite with colleagues and friends for IMAT 2022 in New Orleans, I am amazed at how quickly my presidential year has flown by and how much we have collectively accomplished during this time. The board’s first task, following IMAT 2021 and the annual meeting, was to finalize the search for ASM’s next Executive Director. We were delighted when Sandy Robert, CEO of the Association of Women in Science, agreed to join us on January 1, 2022. Focusing on three key areas—People, Programs, and Financials—Ms. Robert immediately engaged with the board, her staff, and ASM members. In only seven months, she has reviewed ASM’s lines of business and made recommendations to the board regarding enhanced marketing, improved financial reporting, and prioritized alignment of ASM’s strategic initiatives with the Annual Operating Plan. To enhance her knowledge of materials and manufacturing, she met with TMS executives at TMS 2022 to discuss student engagement through Material Advantage, and attended AeroMat/AeroTech, the International Thermal Spray Conference in Vienna, and the Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies Conference and Exposition. Following our update of the Constitution and Rules for Government approved last year, Ms. Robert and her staff are facilitating a review of ASM’s board policies, to be completed this year. She has created harmonious, collegial, and productive collaborations among the board, staff, and volunteers, infusing a new spirit of excitement and enthusiasm for the pursuit of our strategic plan. ASM continues to invest prudently in our key strategic initiatives as we emerge from COVID in good financial health, all the while keeping an eye on today’s uncertain economic times. Our digital first platform saw the launch of the Data Ecosystem in January 2022, followed by webinars and new educational materials describing its use and relevance to Enhancing Materials Performance for Indus- try 4.0. With input from the Content and Data Products Council and the Materials Properties Database Committee, the Digital Task Force continues to lead development of curated, trusted data; high quality content; and analysis/ analytical tools to achieve ASM’s vision of being the leading global resource for materials information. The interdisciplinary collaboration framework resulted in signed collaboration agreements with the American Society for Mechanical Engineers; American Society for Testing and Materials; Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), UK; and the Japanese Institute of Metals and Materials (JIM)—where there will be a strong focus on student initiatives and member engagement in the respective society’s annual meetings. ASM held its first joint webinar with IOM3 on sustainability, and AeroMat was held jointly with SAE International’s AeroTech for the first time this year. With more opportunities under consideration, these collaborations reinforce the importance of ASM’s materials information for many other disciplines. Our global professional network continued ASM’s ongoing collaborations with JIM, IOM3, and DVS (the GermanWelding Society) and our existing partnerships in India, Canada, andMexico. Many productive discussions were held with the Indian Institute of Metals and the India National Council regarding future ASM activities in India. The board approved a new chapter, the Eastern India Raigarh Chapter, and the following Material Advantage Chapters: (1) Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, Chennai, Tamil Nadu; (2) Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu; (3) Pune Vidyarthi Griha College of Engineering and Technology, University of Pune, Maharashtra; (4) the Government Polytechnic, Nagpur, Maharashtra; and (5) VIT Bhopal University, Sehore, Madhya Pradesh. In creating a foundational culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness Committee significantly expanded its membership, reviewed and updated ASM’s communications materials, provided DEI leadership training across ASM and its Affiliate Societies, developed Women in Materials Engineering programming for IMAT 2022, and continued its activities in member recognition and awards. The above accomplishments are just the tip of the iceberg. Overall, 2021-2022 was an extremely productive year. As my presidential year comes to a close, I wish to personally thank all the boardmembers and student members, staff, and volunteers with whom I have worked over the last five years and to welcome our incoming board members. It has been an inspiring journey, accompanied by disruptive change, transitions, and new beginnings. ASM has a very bright future as we enter our next decade of opportunity. It has been my privilege to serve as your president. ASM President, Judith A. Todd, FASM judith.todd@asminternational.org FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Todd
