Dear Friends, Throughout 2021, we continued to hope for the best while preparing for any possibility. With that being said, the ASM Materials Education Foundation is proud of our accomplishments and another successful year of online programming. While we hoped to return to in-person programming in 2021, the continued uncertainty and many school and state regulations made us again pivot to online programming for our ASM Materials Camps®. We are proud to say the online camps had great success and continued to achieve our mission amidst the uncertainty the pandemic brought. A second year of online programming allowed us the opportunity to continue to o er our content to students and teachers across the United States and Canada. We sent out boxes to participants to allow them to participate from their homes or schools. We conducted 16 virtual Materials Camps serving 100 students and 410 teachers, representing 39 U.S. states and Canada. Our online programs also allowed us to improve the Materials Camps content further and develop more robust and creative opportunities for participants. As always, the goal was to continue to expand our outreach to as many teachers and students as possible and provide opportunities to those who may otherwise lack the resources to participate. Knowing that we would eventually return to in-person programming, we wanted to continue to reach teachers and students in new areas not served previously by the Foundation. This year also afforded us the opportunity to develop plans to reach more students from underrepresented groups in materials science and engineering. As a result, the board and staff have begun more proactive efforts to reach varied groups of individuals to ensure we bring the most diverse and talented people into the STEM and materials fields. As you review the work of the ASM Materials Education Foundation in 2021, please consider what we have been able to accomplish over the past two years of a pandemic. During this time, the board has committed to being good stewards of our donors’ money, and to be sure that we are living within our means during tough times. We can only imagine what may be achieved as we move forward in the next few years. The need is great, our goals are broad, and we are always looking for support in meeting those goals. Please share any thoughts, questions, or insights you may have as we continue our mission in 2022. Thank you for your continued support and dedication.
