Regardless, as a technical Society valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion, ASM International has a responsibility to foster a welcoming environment for all its members. The purposeful effort to sup- port women members of the Society is a small step toward demonstrat- ing that those under- represented members are valuable contrib- utors to the materials community. This effort will hopefully provide encouragement for women to remain in the materials community as they progress through their careers. ASM International collects self-reported demographic informa- tion from its members, including gender iden- tity. The current mem- bership identification of the Society consists of: 49% men, 9% women, 1% nonbinary, and 41% not disclosing their iden- tity. These data are useful to understand the com- positionof the overall So- ciety, and members are encouraged to provide such data by completing their member profiles at asminternational.org . This intentional work toward increased inclusion con- tinues through the IDEA Committee, which focuses not only on supporting women in the Society, but all underrepre- sented groups. As we look back on the successful initiative to focus on nominating women for awards, we look forward to expanding the effort to include all underrepresented groups in the Society. If you are interested in participating in the IDEA Committee to further these efforts, contact vicki.burt@ asminternational.org for more information on specific vol- unteer opportunities.
