Prof. Anthony Rol- lett, FASM, spoke on “ICME Gaps for Qualification of Additive Manufacturing of Metals.” Rollett is US Steel Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and co- director of the school’s Next Manufac- turing Center. Cleveland Celebrates Young Members Night On November 16, 2021, the Cleve- land Chapter welcomed Justin Sims as the speaker for its annual Young Mem- bers Night. Sims is senior engineer at Dante Solutions. He developed the DANTE HELP package for both Abaqus and Ansys versions of the software, and is the primary trainer and software sup- port person for the DANTE software. Sims is a graduate mechanical engi- neer from Cleveland State University. The event was hybrid, with an in-person dinner and additional attendees online. Brandywine Holds Hybrid Meeting The Brandywine Valley ASM Chapter held a hybrid technical meeting with a feature presentation by Richard Smith of Cleveland-Cliffs. Smith’s talk, “Celebrating 100 Years of Rolling on the 206-inch Plate Mill,” was presented on December 14, 2021, to an in-person and virtual audience. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Berndt Awarded Victoria Prize Christopher C. Berndt, FASM, TSS-HoF, Australia, was awarded the 2021 Victoria Prize for Sci- ence & Innovation in the Physical Sci- ences for his innovative work focused on advancing surface engineering. The $50,000 award is supported by the Vic- torian Government and delivered in partnership with veski, an entity that supports Australia’s innovation econ- omy. This prestigious prize recognizes the contributions Berndt has made in advancing knowledge, mentor- ship, education, and service to the profession over several decades. Berndt is distinguished professor at Swinburne University of Technology and director of the Surface Engi- neering for Advanced Wear training center. Grice Honored by Alma Mater Daniel R. Grice, Plymouth, Minn., received an Early Career Achievement Award from his alma mater, University of Wisconsin–Madison in November 2021. His nomination was supported by the department of materials science and engineering. The citation men- tioned that he “significantly advanced the diagnosis and remediation of material failures, provided exemplary professional society leadership, and promoted careers in STEM.” Grice is senior materials engineer at Materials Eval- uation and Engineering Inc. and was an ASM Bronze Medal winner in 2020. Devaraj Elected to IFES Arun Devaraj, Richland, Wash., was recently elected as vice president of the International Field Emission Society (IFES), which focuses on devel- opments in high-field nanoscience and atom probe tomography. Devaraj is a materials scientist in the physical and computational sciences directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. During his academic years, Devaraj served as president of the Material Advantage Chapter of the University of North Texas (2008-2011). Zhao Publishes New Series Ji-Cheng Zhao, FASM, chair of the materials science and engineering Department at University of Maryland, College Park, was co-developer of new and very simple models to mathemati- cally describe the diffusion coefficients of metals and alloys as a function of composition and temperature. His research was published in a two-part series in Acta Materialia. The study builds on the 1948 Darken equation and John Ågren’s work from 40 years ago. Notably, Darken, Ågren, and Zhao each were honored with the TMS WilliamHume-Rothery Award in 1979, 2011, and 2021, respectively. Errata Judith Todd, FASM, ASM president, was recently named planning chair for the Franklin Institute’s Commit- tee on Science and the Arts. The November/December 2021 issue of AM&P erroneously gave the impression that she was the overall chair for that committee. Rollett Sims Berndt Grice Devaraj Zhao CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS
