Rudnev is retiring this year and plans to pursue his interests outside of the heat treat industry. His “Professor Induction” col- umn was a popular feature of HTPro for many years and he is known glob- ally as an expert and champion for in- duction heating. Rudnev exemplifies what it means to be- come involved andmake a commitment to his professional Society throughout his career. His contributions to HTS and HTPro were greatly appreciated and will be missed. HEAT TREAT 2021 The Heat Treating Society is looking forward to seeing everyone in person again this September 14-16 in St. Louis for Heat Treat 2021. This year’s conference and expo will feature three days of face-to-face networking opportuni- ties with approximately 200 heat treat exhibitors and com- panies, and its co-location with Motion + Power Technolo- gy Expo 2021 gives access to an additional 300 exhibitors in the co-located exhibit hall. Favorite activities returning this year include a VIP guided industry tour, student/emerging professionals ini- tiatives, including free college student registration, Fluxtrol Student Research Competition, and the ASM Heat Treating Society Strong Bar Student Competition. New features for 2021 include co-location with ASM’s annual meeting, “International Materials, Applications and Technologies (IMAT)” Conference and Exposition. This gives Heat Treat 2021 attendees access to 100 additional materials-related exhibitors, an additional 450 technical presentations and workshops, special crossover keynotes and sessions, comprehensive student/emerging profes- sionals programming and events, joint Heat Treat/IMAT programming in the Solutions Center on the show floor, and joint networking events, including the Women in Ma- terials Engineering breakfast on Monday, September 13. The technical program will feature more than 100 technical presentations on the following topics: • Additive manufacturing/3D processing • Applied technology/processes and applications • Atmosphere technology and surface engineering • Automation and control • Induction heat treating • Industry internet of things/Industry 4.0 • Materials durability/mechanical testing • Microstructural development/characterization • Process simulation • Quality control • Quenching technologies • Residual stress • Vacuum processes and technology For more information, visit www.asminternational. org/heattreat. H T EATING SOCIETY NEWS KEYNOTE SESSION AT HEAT TREAT 2021 Join us for the keynote talk, “The Electric Vehicle: Driving Change in the Heat Industry” presented by James M. Boileau, FASM, on Tuesday, September 14, 2:30-4:00 p.m. Within the last five years, electric vehicles (EVs) have begun to transition into the mainstream of vehicle production and sales. Given the increased public support for controlling climate-affect- ing emissions, it can be reasonably projected that this change to EVs will continue to increase. This shift will cause a fundamental change in the amount of business as well as the way heat treaters conduct their business. This presentation will examine some of the cur- rent changes associated with the transition from IC to EV powerplants. James Boileau is a metallurgist with Element Materials Technology and is retired from Ford Motor Com- pany where he was a materials technical expert in the elec- trified powertrain division.
