Featured was a two-part presentation on “Reflections on 30+ Years as an Automotive Metallurgist & The Dymaxion House: A Histori- cal Failure Analysis.” The speaker, Dr. James Boileau, FASM, is a technical expert for materials and leads the Fastener, Joining and Materials technology team for the Electrified Powertrain Engineering Operations at Ford Motor Company. The Dymaxion House, an example of affordable post-WWII housing, was the inspiration of R. Buckminster Fuller who popularized the geodesic dome. The home was donated to the Henry Ford Museum in 1990. Conservation staff utilized the Ford Research laboratory to analyze the fatigue cracks in the floor of the house. Dr. Boileau presented details of the failure analysis and resulting conservation solutions. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Todd Featured in Penn State Publication Judith Todd, FASM, head of the department of engineering science and mechanics in the Penn State Col- lege of Engineering, was interviewed by the Penn State News regarding her appointment as vice president of ASM International at the society’s Annual Meeting on Sept. 14. Todd has served as a fellow of ASM International since 1997 and as a member of the board of trustees since 2017. While on the ASM board of trustees, Todd has served as a liaison to the Women in Materials Engineering Commit- tee, a liaison to the Thermal Spray Society, and the chair of a task force that focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion. “As vice president, my highest priorities are mem- bership growth, technical excellence encompassing new materials frontiers, and digital content and knowledge dis- semination,” Todd said. “I envision ASM becoming a role model for diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement across the member spectrum.” “I hope to engage new generations of young ASMmem- bers,” Todd said. “I will work closely with the ASM Materials Education Foundation to engage K-12 students and their teachers in the ASM Materials Camps. As we rethink mate- rials education in a highly interdisciplinary context, there are many exciting opportunities to attract new members from a myriad of engineering and scientific disciplines and medicine.” Daehn Honored for Technology Commercialization Glenn Daehn, FASM, professor of metallurgical engi- neering at The Ohio State University, is being recognized with the Ohio Faculty Council’s annual Technology Com- mercialization Award. The award recognizes a faculty mem- ber in the state university system in Ohio for exceptional research discoveries and the role they have played in sup- porting the translation of those discoveries into marketable products and/or services. His startups have licensed seven technologies to date. He is principal investigator for Ohio State’s Impulse Manufacturing Lab, which has developed its impulse weld- ing method for commercial use and has numerous patents. The technology for welding aluminum to steel has tremen- dous potential for reviving automotive manufacturing in Dr. James Boileau’s virtual presentation. Congratulations to this ASM Chapter celebrating 100 years of serving local members! Washington, DC Thank you for your commitment! We look forward to celebrating your future success!
