In our current Strategic Plan, one of the four Strategic Goals is: “Cultivate a foundational culture and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion for all ASM stakeholders.” We are working to be a technical society whose overarch- ing focus is our commitment to respond to the needs of all our members and their organizations. “Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.” – Mahatma Gandhi Please show your support of our vision by volunteering to become an active member of the IDEA Committee. Buckminster Fuller Since its formation in 2013, the Women in Materials Engineering (WiME) committee has been one of the most active ASM committees. At the urging of the WiME leader- ship, ASM has now extended inclusion-focused activities to all under-represented members. It was my pleasure to participate in the Board approval of the newly formed IDEA Committee – Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness. The IDEA Committee’s structure includes four teams: • Women in Materials Engineering Team – Focus on the needs of women engineers and further the momentum of the WiME activities. • URM Team – Focus on the support and acceptance of under-represented minorities (URM) • LGBTQ+ Team – Focus on the support for LGBTQ+ interests and acceptance • Retention Team – Focus on the retention of women, URM, and those who otherwise feel marginalized in the materials engineering field. Our vision is to have an ASM where everyone feels wel- comed and each person’s needs are met. We have taken one step closer to making this a reality. When everyone is included, we all win. Danielle Cote and Dharma Maddala both received the Bronze Medal Award fromDavid Furrer, FASM, in 2019. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
